NHL news: Perry, Thomas, Lidstrom lead award winners
The NHL Awards went down last night; the winners provided a mixture of old and new faces.
The Hart Trophy was a minor upset, as Anaheim Ducks forward Corey Perry beat out Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin to capture the league MVP award. Perry led the league with 50 goals this season, including 11 game-winners. 
Not surprisingly, Tim Thomas put the cherry on top of what might go down as the greatest season ever by an NHL goaltender. He won his second Vezina Trophy in three years last night and the Bruins puckstopper combines that hardware with a Stanley Cup ring and a pile of single-season records, including highest save percentage (.938).
The voters may have gotten a bit sentimental with the Norris Trophy. They gave it to Nicklas Lidstrom for the seventh time. The Detroit Red Wings defenseman is among the greatest of all time and had 62 points this season…but he was a minus-2. Zdeno Chara, also nominated, was plus-33. Think the voters got it wrong this time.
Other winners included Ryan Kesler (best defensive forward), Jeff Skinner (top rookie), Dan Bylsma (coach of the year), Daniel Sedin (MVP as voted by the players), Martin St. Louis (most sportsmanlike) and Chara (Mark Messier leadership award).
Stamkos to adorn NHL 12 cover
The EA Sports cover curse doesn’t really seem to apply to hockey. After all, Patrick Kane scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal the year he graced the cover of NHL 10.
