It’s been hard to not hear about the Indians this off season. The media has given them massive recognition and some have even deemed them as a potential World Series contender.
The Cleveland Indians somehow won 92 games last season and snuck into the playoffs. In fact, they even pushed Detroit for the division title but there is no way they don’t take a step back this year.
The Yankees had a comfortable lead in the AL East for several weeks, but they have lost 3 straight and only lead the hot Tampa Bay Rays by 2.5 games in the division.
The Rays were in a bad way but may be turning the corner with a series win against the Yankees.
MLB news: J.P. Arencibia exits after beaning
Toronto Blue Jays rookie backstop J.P. Arencibia left last night’s game against the Boston Red Sox when he took a Jonathan Papelbon pitch off his left wrist.
MLB news: MLB may seize Dodgers
Is Major League Baseball about to seize control of the Los Angeles Dodgers? Reportedly, the league is considering filing a motion to grab control of the team, which has filed for bankruptcy.
Owner Frank McCourt claims that he filed for bankruptcy because the MLB rejected a massive television deal with Fox.
League commissioner Bud Selig maintains, however, that he rejected because McCourt had already put the club into financial trouble by siphoning more than $100 million in club revenue for personal use.
Josh Johnson to see Dr. Andrews;
Gulp. Florida Marlins ace Josh Johnson’s recovery from a right shoulder injury just took a turn for the worst. He’s in the midst of a throwing program but is “not feeling 100 per cent” and is off to see Dr. James Andrews. That means major surgery may be in Johnson’s future.
Thumb surgery for Choo
It appears Shin-Soo Choo’s frustrating 2011 season is at a merciful end. The Cleveland Indians outfielder had surgery yesterday to repair a broken left thumb and could be sidelined for two and a half months if not the rest of the season – especially if the Tribe fall out of the playoff race. Fausto Carmona has struggled mightily of late, getting rocked for six-plus runs in four of his last seven starts. It’s easy to see why: the sinkerballer’s sinker just ain’t sinkin’.
Not many people expected Cleveland to be one of the best teams in baseball. Nor did many think Arizona would be neck and neck with the World Series champs. They didn’t believe Seattle had much of a chance either.
It may not be as crucial as the home dominance in basketball or college football but home parks can still play a role in MLB betting. Here’s a look at the top 10 home teams in Major League Baseball this season. What factors (aside from a team’s overall skill level) give them special advantages?

John Martin
Cleveland Indians vs. Texas Rangers
Martin’s Friday Free Play: 1 Unit on Texas Rangers -118 (Listing Harrison)
Matt Harrison has been a great addition to the Rangers staff with a 5-2 mark as a starter this season. Harrison is only getting better the more innings he throws, going 3-0 with a 3.72 ERA through his last three starts. Harrison and the Rangers are a solid bet as my free play at home today against Fausto Carmona and the Cleveland Indians. Carmona is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA through his last three starts. Carmona has already faced the Rangers once this season, yielding 6 earned runs before getting relieved of his duties after 2 innings of work. Cleveland is 11-28 as a road underdog of +100 or higher this season. Texas is 61-30 in home games vs. an AL team with a batting average of .260 or worse in the second half of the season since 1997. Harrison over Carmona tonight.
Cash in with Texas as the favorite.

The National Football League heads north of the border on Thursday night to kick off the second week of its preseason schedule. Here’s your Daily Sports Roundup . . .
Event of the day . . .
The Buffalo Bills are starting to tap into the lucrative Toronto market this season, and it all begins with their exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Rogers Centre on Thursday night (with the kickoff set for 7:30pm ET). And Bills supporters hope that their team will be lucrative at the betting window once again this season.
Buffalo went 7-9 straight-up in 2007, but they were 10-6 against-the-spread. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, was 10-6 SU last year, and only 8-8 ATS. For Thursday night the Vegas oddsmakers have pegged this neutral-site game as a pick’em, despite Buffalo’s proximity to Toronto. The total for the game has been set at 33 points.
Steelers starting QB Ben Roethlisberger should see just limited time on Thursday, with newly-signed backup Byron Leftwich getting more snaps. Don’t expect to see much of RB Willie Parker either. Bills starting QB Trent Edwards will be looking to bounce back from a poor outing in Buffalo’s preseason opener against Washington.
Cole Hamels will be gunning for his 10th win of the year on Tuesday night when the Phillies continue their road series in Los Angeles. Here’s your Daily Sports Roundup …
Event of the day . . .
Philadelphia is still trying to hold off both the Mets and the Marlins in the tight NL East standings, while Los Angeles is looking to overtake the Diamondbacks in the race for top spot in the NL West. Those two clubs will play the second game of their west-coast series on Tuesday night, beginning at 10:10pm ET.

Cleveland Indians vs. Toronto Blue Jays
1 Unit FREE PLAY on Cleveland Indians -135 (listing Lee) Cleveland goes for the road sweep today behind the 15-2 Cliff Lee and I like them to get it. The Indians are a dominant 22-7 in the last 29 meetings in this series, 10-3 in Lee’s last 13 road starts, 4-0 in Lee’s last 4 starts with 5 days of rest, and 23-9 in Lee’s last 32 starts after allowing 2 runs or less in their previous game. The Blue Jays won’t be able to hold down the Tribe behind inexperienced starter Scott Richmond.
