Los Angeles Angels (37-39)
Dan Haren (6-5, 2.96)

Offense remains hard to come by – the Angels are 26th in baseball in offense – but L.A.’s pitching has been excellent more often than not.

Both Jered Weaver and Dan Haren got off to blistering starts on the mound in 2011. Weaver slumped a bit but has since caught fire again. Haren, on the other hand, is struggling of late. He has allowed at least seven hits and three runs in five straight starts. His last time out, the Mets rocked him for six runs and chased him after four innings.

Still, there could be reason to expect a turnaround. Haren has walked just four batters over his five-start slump, so his control remains spot-on. He also has a 3.19 ERA over 15 career appearances against the Dodgers, whom he’ll face on Friday night.

Los Angeles Dodgers (34-42)
Rubby De La Rosa (3-1, 4.58)

It just ain’t happening for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season. Their pitching has helped them win three of four, allowing one run in those three victories combined, but the Dodgers won’t contend again in the National League West until they rustle up some real offense.

Matt Kemp continues to have by far the best season of his career, batting .328 and on pace to literally flirt with becoming the game’s first-ever 50/50 player, but he has no help aside from Andre Ethier. The Dodgers’ third best hitter is Aaron Miles. Ouch. Of the top seven batting averages on the team, three of them belong to pitchers. Embarrassing stuff. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Is it just me or is Rubby De La Rosa overrated? His stuff looks good, as he has 21 strikeouts in 19.2 innings, but he also has 12 walks. He’s only started three times and hasn’t gone more than five innings. I dare to say that he’s only talked about because his name is Rubby.

MLB Trends:

Under is 8-3-1 in LAA last 12 Fri. games.
LAA are 57-26 in their last 83 interleague games.
Over is 6-1-1 in LA last 8 interleague games.
Over is 6-2-2 in LA last 10 games following a loss.
LA are 5-14 in their last 19 interleague games.
Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.

The pick:

Tough call on Friday night. Haren has a solid track record against the Dodgers but Ethier and Kemp have both hit multiple homers off him in their careers. He’s also slumping, so the Dodgers might get to him.

On the flipside, the Angels’ offense isn’t doing much. As much as I’m not a believer in De La Rosa, the Angels have never seen him, so they could struggle. I expect a surprisingly high-scoring game – and a Dodger win.

Angels vs Dodgers prediction: Dodgers 6, Angels 5
