NHL news; Smyth, Filatov, Regehr, Brouwer, Campbell, Setoguchi, Burns, Liles traded during draft weekend
The NHL Entry draft had a few early-pick surprises for the first-time in years. Not everyone had Nugent-Hopkins going to the Edmonton Oilers at No. 1, nor did they have Adam Larsson slipping to fourth. But the flurry of trades stole the show over the weekend.
The Los Angeles Kings granted Ryan Smyth’s wish and sent him home to Edmonton for Colin Fraser and a 2012 seventh-round pick. The Columbus Blue Jackets gave up on former top prospect Nikita Filatov, sending him to the Ottawa Senators for a third-round pick. Defenseman Robyn Regehr waived his no-trade clause and went to Buffalo with Ales Kotalik and a second-rounder for Chris Butler and Paul Byron. 
Chicago shipped Troy Brouwer to Washington for the Caps’ first-round pick (Phillip Danault); it also flipped rushing defenseman Brian Campbell to Florida for winger Rotislav Olesz.
The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired John-Michael Liles from the Avalanche to be their new power-play quarterback in exchange for a 2012 second-rounder.
In the weekend’s biggest deal, the Minnesota Wild sent star defenseman Brent Burns and a 2012 second-rounder to the San Jose Sharks for forward Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle and their first-round pick on Friday night. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
