NHL Lines: Montreal vs NYI Pick

Tuesday night in the NHL will feature a match up between two of the top dogs in the Eastern Conference. The Montreal Canadiens (21-11-2) will travel to Long Island to take on the New York Islanders (23-10-0).

It’s a big clash at the top of the Eastern Conference on Tuesday when the Habs and Isles lock up for the first time in the 2014-15 season.

The Isles have been a bit of surprise this season, while Montreal has picked up where they left off as Eastern Conference finalists a year ago.

Canadiens

The Habs continue to roll and stay among the elite in the Eastern Conference. They’ve been getting it done with a balanced attack of three lines that can contribute to the goal scoring and are backstopped by one of the best in the game in Carey Price.

Montreal’s success has come largely due to solid defensive play with vets like Sergei Gonchar and Andrei Markov complimenting their star blue liner P.K. Subban. What has really lent to Montreal’s ability to stay at the top is that they’ve done a great job in avoiding losing streaks.

They haven’t really gone off for a stellar win streak, but they’re a respectable 5-4-1 over their last 10 games.

Islanders

The Islanders have gone about their business of keeping Pittsburgh in sight for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division in a different fashion than the Habs employ. New York has been streaky throughout the season running off long win streaks and are riding a four game winning spell.

John Tavares has been great for this team so far and has put up a solid 33 games with 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points. The supporting cast has also been very strong and that has made the Islanders one of the most dangerous teams on the attack.

Kyle Okposo has 28 points and is tied with Tavares for the team lead. Brock Nelson has had a breakout year so far with 27 points and Ryan Strome is rounding into great form in his first season as a full time member of the team with 21 points and a team leading +12.

Jaroslav Halak has been brilliant of late and is a big reason that the Isles are on a four game win streak. The goalie will take on his former team and I think he’ll shine in this one. Carey Price is no slouch and he’ll be on his game against the netminder whose job he took over.

Look for this one to be a low scoring affair, I’m taking a 2-1 win for the Islanders.
