The Rangers will wrap up their road trip through Western Canada on Wednesday night when they take on the reeling Calgary Flames. Calgary is returning home after a miserable road trip where they lost all four games and brought their losing streak to five in total.

Rangers

It’s been tough to get a read on last year’s Stanley Cup finalist so far this year. They’ve shown some flashes of their form from a year ago and have held a distinct advantage over Metropolitan Division leaders Pittsburgh. On the other hand though, they’ve had some very questionable performances in losses to the Edmonton Oilers and Colorado Avalanche. The Atlantic Division has also feasted on the Rangers with the Lightning and Leafs posting a 5-0-0 record over NY.

The team has hit its stride a bit on this road trip though it’s hard to really invest a lot into their most recent two victories. Their 5-1 mauling of the Canucks on Saturday was a game where Vancouver simply did not show up and beating the Oilers 2-0 on Sunday holds little value as the Oilers are the worst team in the NHL.

That being said, the Rangers are finally getting healthy and could make a push in the pretty weak Metro where it looks like Pittsburgh and the Isles are going to run away while teams like Washington, Philadelphia and the Rangers will be left to battle for third.

Flames

If you follow hockey closely you probably saw this slide coming for the Flames from a mile away. This team was living dangerously for the first quarter of the season but had managed to position themselves among the top teams in the Pacific Division and Western Conference.

The analytics crowd is smiling at the Flames’ losing skid as it just proves that you can’t get outshot and outplayed night in and night out and expect that you can just make third period come backs whenever you want.

Eventually you need to play a solid 60 minutes and the Flames haven’t done that in a while or very often at all this year. This team is still very young and will have to learn from this skid about bouncing back from adversity. The game always seems easy when you’re winning, but what makes true contenders is how they respond when things don’t go their way on the scoreboard.

Calgary returns home tonight and will be hoping to give their fans something to cheer about by getting back into the win column.

Rangers vs. Flames 4* Free Pick

It hasn’t exactly been a long road trip for the Rangers but this will be their third game in four nights and they may be a little tired. For a team like the Rangers that relies heavily on speed and tempo this is a dangerous game as the young Flames play a speed game and will likely come flying out of the gates early to get their crowd into the game.

This one should be close and I think Calgary can pull out a win in what should be a close game. Take the Flames here.
