San Antonio

It is hard to believe that the defending champs are only the 7th best team in the Western Conference – a fact that could change if they beat the Clippers tonight.

As much as any team San Antonio should benefit from the longer All-Star break as they pursue yet another title. In this one they will also be looking to exact a little revenge for a beating they took at the hands of the Clippers at home last month. The number on this one has been moving around a lot. Neither team is strong against the spread.

I know that everyone is familiar with the Spurs ways but it is still a bit mind boggling the way this team eschews stats for wins. There is no one on this team scoring as many as 16ppg but everyone makes a contribution – all 5 starters score in double figures and their next 5 off the bench average 7 or more.

Now that they have Kawhi Leonard back they are ready to start pushing up the standings.

Los Angeles

The Clippers bounced back just before the break, winning their final two games without the services of the injured Blake Griffin. They are not out of the woods yet though as he will still be out a couple of weeks and the teams behind them are charging hard. Things are pretty tight and if they go on an extended losing streak again they will feel some serious pressure. This specific game is big too because if they lose to the Spurs they will swap positions with them in the Western Conference standings.

With Griffin out they have moved Spencer Hawes into the starting lineup. Pairing him with DeAndre Jordan gives them good size but is also means they have little of it coming off the bench. L.A. doesn’t have great depth to begin with and the injury puts that into sharper focus.

Without Griffin Jordan has become even more of a monster. He has had three games with 20 points and 20 rebounds in his last six.
