Kansas State was expected to enter a rebuilding year of sorts after taking a run at the title game a year ago, while Michigan had their sites set on a championship this season but could not maintain their strong early season play for long and could now have some trouble finding motivation as they find themselves slotted into a lesser bowl game.
The teams will enter this game in very different form as Kansas State won five of its final six games to earn a berth in the postseason, while Michigan dropped four of its final five games.
The last of those losses for Michigan came in an absolute thriller though, as the team combined with Ohio State to put on a heck of show at the Big House. Quarterback Devan Gardner lit up the Buckeye secondary in that one, completing 32 of 45 passes for 451 yards and four scores without an interception, adding a fifth score on the ground.

He connected with top wideout Jeremy Gallon nine times for 175 yards and a score as the Michigan offense put up 41 points, but couldn’t complete a late two-point conversion attempt and fell to Ohio State by a score of 42-41 in a heartbreaker. With another 47 yards in this game, Gallon would set the school’s single-season mark for receiving yards.
Kansas State supporters must not have thought there would be a bowl game in the cards for the team after a 2-4 start to the year, but a strong finish to their regular year has the team in the postseason against a solid opponent. Even looking back, none of those initial four losses was by more than 10 points, so the team must have known there was something there. They’ll need to buck the trend of recent play in bowl games as the team has dropped five in a row. Conversely, Michigan is 20-22 all-time in bowl appearances.
Quarterbacks Jake Waters and Daniel Sams filled in for the departed Collin Klein and combined to throw for 2,650 yards and rush for 1,054 more, and each will get time against Michigan’s defense in Tempe.
The time off should serve Michigan well and allow them to re-gain the form they started the year with, while Kansas State likely would have preferred to play this game three weeks earlier so they could continue to ride the wave of momentum they closed the season with.
The Wolverines are 4-1 ATS in their last five games against Big 12 opponents, while the Wildcats are 0-5 ATS in their last five bowl games.
The play: Michigan +3.5
The Wolverines have not gotten off the to the best of starts. It might be a little bit of a hangover from last year’s run to the Finals but there have certainly been injuries that have affected them adversely too with big man Mitch McGary both missing time and not looking all that great out there overall.
The Ohio State Buckeyes have their eyes set on an undefeated season and a trip to the National Championship game. The Michigan Wolverines want nothing more than play spoilers and upset the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Both the Michigan Wolverines and Nebraska Cornhuskers have a lot in common. Both are two proud universities with a rich tradition and history. And both have had disappointing seasons once again.
Looking for a chance to claim first place in the legends division, the No. 21 Michigan Wolverines head to Spartan Stadium on Saturday to take on cross-state rivals, the No. 22 ranked Michigan State Spartans.
No team has been able to make 5-0 look as bad as the 18th-ranked Michigan Wolverines have, dropping in the polls despite a perfect record. They’ll look to put forth an impressive win this weekend when they take on a Big Ten foe, the Penn State Nittany Lions.
The Michigan Wolverines and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will face off on Saturday at the Big House. Michigan rolled over the Central Michigan Chippewas 59-9 in their season opener, while the Irish made quick work of Temple, dispatching the Owls 28-6.
After the massive 11-2 season in 2011, the Michigan Wolverines 8-5 season in 2012 had to be seen as a disappointment. Still, it’s obvious that Brady Hoke has this program continuing on the right path.
I know I am supposed to write about Louisville but I have to throw some love to the Wichita State Shockers here. They pushed the Cardinals more than anybody expected and could easily have won the game.
The Orange were very impressive last week in earning their spot in the Final Four. They put forth two fantastic defensive games holding Indiana and Marquette to an average of just 45 points.
The Wolverines are the second highest ranked team in the conference despite finishing tied for fourth in the standings. As a result they didn’t get a bye like Wisconsin even though they were tied with them.
The Wolverines have been a bit of a tease this season. After an impressive win against Ohio State to begin the week they fell at Wisconsin over the weekend.
The Buckeyes are in the thick of the Big Ten race, hanging out with the Wolverines and the other basketball power from that state in second place.
The Wolverines are done touring the MAC and the directional in-state schools. It is time to get to the business of proving they are worth their lofty ranking against the best conference in America.
A lot is expected of the N.C. State program this year and so far they haven’t delivered much. They got hammered by an Oklahoma State team that features a couple of great players already but I am more distressed by a near home loss to UNC-Asheville.
