I know I am supposed to write about Louisville but I have to throw some love to the Wichita State Shockers here. They pushed the Cardinals more than anybody expected and could easily have won the game.

Louisville

Louisville eventually came through because of their defense.

They seemed to tire out Wichita State then pounced upon them. They won because they were far better in the last 5 minutes.

This team has shown the ability to close out victories – I am looking at you Duke.

Guard Russ Smith may have led with 21 points but reserve forward Luke Hancock was the star of the game for Louisville. His hot shooting chipped in 20 points and it seems like he was in the middle of everything good they were doing in the second half.

Smith is the lone constant for Louisville and from game to game other players step up.

They are going to need some kind of rebound performance by center Georgui Dieng who didn’t score and had trouble with fouls.

Louisville is the top defensive club in the nation and Michigan is the top offensive club. Who will prevail? Some like to say that defense always travels and that is why Louisville is the favourite in this one.

The number seems right but I am not sure the chalk is the way to go after what I saw on Saturday night.

Michigan

The 61 points Michigan scored against Syracuse was the most the Orange gave up in the tournament. It was also the least the Wolverines have scored in the tournament – but it was just enough. Like Louisville, Big Blue got some unexpected contributions in this.

The fact that they struggled but still ultimately prevailed bodes well as Louisville is likely to smother them for some stretch of the game on Monday night. [ad-6571516]

Michigan will look to get its lead dog going against Louisville. Guard Trey Burke was an important part of their win over the Orange even though he scored just 7 points. Oddly enough his only two sub double digit scoring efforts of the season have come in this tournament.

Being hounded by Smith or Peyton Siva is hardly the ideal way to get the juices flowing but he will be happy to not see that 2-3 zone. Hopefully shooter Nick Stauskas will feel the same way.

He didn’t knock down a single shot against the Orange after being just lethal against Florida.

I am not saying Michigan is a lock but I think they are the better value side. I think both teams will excel at what they do best.

At points in the game the Cardinals will clamp down on Michigan while at others the Wolverines offense will flow beautifully.

In the end I think that this one, like so many others, will come down to the final possession.
