Today’s Sports News – NFL news: Michael Vick cancels Oprah appearance; Champ Bailey puts house up for sale

Michael Vick cancels Oprah appearance

Michael Vick was scheduled to appear on The Oprah Winfrey show but cancelled his scheduled appearance this week. He didn’t give a reason for backing out but you have to wonder if it relates to backlash he drew during the “key to the city” ceremony that backfired on him in Dallas over the Super Bowl weekend.

Wasn’t Champ Bailey supposedly resuming contract negotiations with the Denver Broncos? He put his Colorado home up for sale this week. Is he posturing for a better deal or leaving Denver? Time will tell.

NBA news: Rudy Gay injures shoulder; another head injury for Mike Miller; Stoudemire, Horford trash talk

The injury bug bit a few playoff hopefuls last night. Memphis’ Rudy Gay partially dislocated his left shoulder during last night’s victory over the 76ers and will miss at least four weeks. That puts a serious dent in the Grizzlies’ chances at hanging onto a playoff seed in the West.

Poor Mike Miller can’t catch a break. For the third time in three games, he took a shot to the head. He was taken to hospital after the Heat’s victory over Indiana last night for testing and will miss tonight’s game against the Toronto Raptors.

Will things be awkward for the Eastern Conference All-Stars this weekend when Amar’e Stoudemire and Al Horford take to the court together? Leading up to their Wednesday-night matchup, Stoudemire said that Horford “don’t want to see me” on the court. Horford countered by saying, “I don’t understand what he means by that…Like were’ supposed to be scared of him. Ain’t nobody scared of him. We’re all grown men, so it’s all good.”

MLB news: Albert Pujols’ signing deadline passes; Brewers extend Rickie Weeks; Indians sign Cabrera; D’Backs sign Branyan

Could we soon see the end of Albert Pujols’ career in St. Louis? The Cardinals failed to strike a long-term deal with him before his imposed deadline today. He reportedly turned down an eight-year, $200-million offer and wants something closer to $275 million over 10 years. The Cardinals say they’re still hopeful that they can re-sign him after the 2011 season but the lineup for his services will stretch out the door.

After he finally stayed healthy and showed why he was once such a highly regarded prospect, Rickie Weeks has a nice new deal. The Brewers signed him to a four-year, $38.5-million extension today. Weeks broke out with 29 homers, 83 RBI, 112 runs and 11 stolen bases last season.

A couple of teams made minor signings today. The Cleveland Indians signed veteran shortstop Orlando Cabrera to a one-year deal and the Arizona Diamondbacks inked slugger Russell Branyan, who could make an impact at Chase Field with his big power.

NHL news: Jonas Hiller on IR with light-headedness; Matt Duchene out indefinitely; Joel Quenneville hospitalized; Bruins acquire Chris Kelly

Most of the latest NHL news unfortunately revolves around the infirmary. All-Star Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller has been placed on injured reserve with the same “light headedness” that sidelined him earlier this February. He posted a shutout in his most recent action last Sunday but was dizzy after Tuesday’s practice. He’ll miss at least three games.

Colorado Avalanche super sophomore Matt Duchene’s fate looks even worse. He’s out indefinitely after injuring his hand in Monday’s game against Calgary.

Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville was hospitalized this week with an undisclosed illness that the team doctor insists “is not of a cardiac nature.” He was taken to the emergency room early Wednesday and won’t be on the bench for tonight’s game against Minnesota.

The Boston Bruins picked up some secondary scoring last night, acquiring Chris Kelly from the Ottawa Senators for a second-round draft pick. Kelly had 12 goals so far this season for Ottawa.
