The Houston Texans (0-4 SU, 1-3 ATS, 4-0 O/U), entered the 2008 season hoping to improve on their solid 8-8 record from a season ago while making a legitimate push to reach the postseason but have failed miserably while getting off to an 0-4 start.
The Washington Redskins (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS, 2-3 O/U), were thought to be the worst team in the NFC East following their season-opening, 17-6 road loss to the New York Giants.
Now, after winning four straight games in convincing fashion, including two consecutive NFC East road contests, the Redskins are riding high and sitting pretty with their NFC playoff hopes.
The Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3 SU, 1-4 ATS, 3-2 O/U), had high hopes of making their first Super Bowl appearance this season after a recording a promising 11-5 record in 2007, but are in serious danger of even making the playoffs this season even at this early juncture of the 2008 regular season.
The Arizona State Sun Devils (2-3 SU, 1-3 ATS) are trying to break a three-game losing streak, but they’re going to have a hard time doing it, as they face off against the USC Trojans (3-1 SU & ATS) in NCAA college football action that is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 PM ET at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (natural turf).
This time the Red River Rivalry has additional meaning, as the Oklahoma Sooners (5-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) face off against the Texas Longhorns (5-0 SU & ATS) in a Big 12 contest that has both conference and national title implications. The action gets underway at Noon ET at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
The Georgia Bulldogs (4-1 SU, 2-1-1 ATS), have had the benefit of an off-week and are on the rebound from their first loss of the season. On Saturday they will try to redeem themselves at home when they hook up with the Tennessee Volunteers (2-3 SU, 1-4 ATS) in NCAA college football action in the SEC that is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 PM ET at Sanford Stadium (natural turf) in Athens, GA.
The Atlanta Falcons (3-2 SU & ATS), who just got an uplifting road win last week against the Packers, return home this week to face the Chicago Bears (3-2 SU, 3-1-1 ATS) in an NFL contest that is slated to get underway at 1 PM ET at the Georgia Dome (artificial turf) in Atlanta.
The last time New York Jets (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS, 2-2 O/U) quarterback Brett Favre took the field, he tossed a career-high six touchdown passes.
Playing against the lowly Cincinnati Bengals (0-5 SU, 2-3 ATS, 2-3 O/U) this week at Giants Stadium could allow Favre to tie or even surpass that personal record as the winless Bengals don’t figure to offer much resistance as they seek their first win of the 2008-09 NFL season.
Why anyone would want to coach the dysfunctional Oakland Raiders (1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS, 3-1 O/U), these days is beyond me, but new head coach Tom Cable is clearly in over his head with a franchise that is totally ‘lost in the sauce.’
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2 SU, 4-1 ATS, 3-2 O/U), have a winning record after five games but are coming off a dismal 16-13 road loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday in the BetUS Sportsbook.
The Carolina Panthers (4-1 SU, 3-1-1 ATS, 1-4 O/U), on the other hand, have won and covered the spread in two straight games, including Sunday’s 34-0 home blowout of the abysmal Kansas City Chiefs.
The Air Force Falcons (3-2 SU, 3-1 ATS), smarting from a tough loss to Navy, will regroup and go at it against the San Diego State Aztecs (1-4 SU, 2-2 ATS) in NCAA college football action in the Mountain West that is scheduled to get underway at 9:30 PM ET at Qualcomm Stadium (natural turf) in San Diego.
While the Minnesota Vikings (2-3 SU, 2-3 ATS, 3-2 O/U), have looked nothing like the Super Bowl contenders many thought they would be coming into the 2008 NFL season, their problems are almost microscopic when compared to the Detroit Lions’ (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS, 2-2 O/U).
The Baltimore Ravens (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS, 2-2 O/U), and the Indianapolis Colts (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS, 2-2 O/U), will both look to get on the plus-side of the win column when Indy hosts Baltimore on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The New England Patriots (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS, 2-2 O/U), got back in the win column in the BetUS Sportsbook on Sunday, beating the rebuilding, (again) San Francisco 49ers on the road, 30-21.
The San Diego Chargers (2-3 SU, 2-2-1 ATS, 4-1 O/U) took an inexplicable 17-10 road loss on the chin to a clearly inferior Miami Dolphins team and enter this Week 6 contest in flat-out desperation mode.
The veteran-laden Chicago Bears (3-2 SU, 3-1-1 ATS, 2-3 O/U), have won two straight games in the BetUS Sportsbook while simultaneously covering the spread in both and are beginning to look like a viable contender in the NFC this season.
The Baltimore Ravens (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS) have played inspired football for new coach John Harbaugh and new QB Joe Flacco. On Sunday they will travel to the Hoosier State to take on the Indianapolis Colts (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) in NFL action that is slated to kick off at 1 PM ET at Lucas Oil Stadium (artificial turf) in Indianapolis.
