Personally, I think the New York Yankees are exactly where I thought they’d be at this point in the season. They’re competitive, five games over .500, leading the majors in homers, but getting spotty efforts from their pitching staff. In 51 games, they have 27 quality starts, 24th-best in baseball.
Eight of those quality starts, believe it or not, belong to Freddy Garcia (and in nine tries). He hasn’t been perfect but Garcia has consistently given the Yanks a chance to win. When you lead the big leagues in long balls, that should be all you really need.
New York is still waiting for several slumping hitters to awaken, most notably Nick Swisher. He clubbed his second tater of the year on Sunday. Maybe it’s the start of a hot streak?
Oakland Athletics (27-27 through May 29)
Brett Anderson (3-4, 2.84)
Fuelled by the best pitching staff in baseball so far this season – the A’s lead the majors with a 2.84 ERA and 37 quality starts – Oakland is back in the American League West hunt. Through Sunday, it had won four straight games.
Though hits have been hard to come by, the A’s have to be happy with Josh Willingham’s contribution. He leads the team with nine homers and is on track for a 100-RBI season. Oakland doesn’t need a ton of run support to win these days, so his modest contributions are appreciated.

Brett Anderson takes the mound for Oakland Tuesday. While he’s been his usual outstanding self of late, allowing one run over his last two starts combined, he hasn’t fared well against the Yankees in his career. Anderson is 0-3 with a 4.68 ERA against the Yankees, who bat .305 off him.
The big Anderson killer is switch-hitting monster Mark Teixeira. He’s a .500 career hitter with a homer and six RBI in 12 career at-bats against Anderson. Tex also happens to be on fire right now, with six homers in his last 10 games. Look for him to lead the Yankees to a road win.
