Preview: All eyes are on Richmond International Raceway this weekend as the Sprint Cup Series runs race number 26 of the 36-race season, its final event in the Race to the Chase. There are 13 drivers vying for the final 8 available spots in the Chase, with the most heated battle between Matt Kenseth, currently hanging on to the 12th or final Chase spot, Brian Vickers in 13th and Kyle Busch in 14th – all three separated by just 37 points.

Safe Bets:

1. Kyle Busch (+600): As noted above, Busch is fighting for his Chase life, currently 14th in points and trying to make the top 12. Not only will he be driving like he stole it Saturday night, but he’ll be bringing the best average finish among active drivers at Richmond with a 6.1, and he won the most recent race here in May.

2. Jimmie Johnson (+700): Johnson has won three of the last five Richmond races including two straight Chevy Rock & Roll 400s. He is tied with Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the most Richmond wins, but achieved his mark in fewer starts than the other two drivers.

Dark Horse:

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (+2000): Now that the Chase pressure is off, Earnhardt has nothing to lose by going for wins. And he has won at Richmond a series-high three times, most recently in 2006. The No. 88 team has been showing signs of life the past few weeks with two top-10s in the past three races.

Summary: Things will be rockin’ and rollin’ in Richmond Saturday night. Look for Tony Stewart to contend as well.

2009 Sharpie 500 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Race: Sharpie 500 – Bristol Motor Speedway
Date: Saturday, August 22, 2009
Time: 7:43 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 6:30 PM EST on ESPN

Preview: This is the second trip this season to “The World’s Fastest Half Mile,” also known as Bristol Motor Speedway. The track has been renowned for the rough and tumble racing that used to characterize a Bristol race, but a repaving project in 2007 seems to have altered that reputation somewhat. Still, hopes are high that the double-file restart rule which NASCAR established earlier this year will hasten the return of that old excitement and energy.

Safe Bets:

1. Kyle Busch (+600): Busch won here in March, leading 378 of 503 laps, and has a previous win in the spring of 2007, along with two second-place finishes in nine Bristol starts. Remarkably, in the last two Bristol races, Busch alone led 793 of 1003 laps – that’s 79% of the total laps in the two races combined.

2. Kurt Busch (+650): Kurt was pretty dominant here a few years ago, winning four out of five between ’02-’04 and adding another win in ’06. He and Jeff Gordon are tied for the most Bristol wins with five a piece, but Kurt’s came in 17 starts compared to 33 for Gordon. Busch’s overall program is much improved this year compared to the last two seasons, giving him his best chance in a while to return to his prior Bristol form.

Dark Horse:

1. Kevin Harvick (+2000): Harvick has the best average finish among active drivers with more than one start at Bristol, a 10.8 in 17 starts. He won the spring 2005 race here and finished fourth in this race last year. Kevin also has four second-place Bristol finishes.

Summary: Bristol could be Carl Edwards best chance to find Victory Lane before the start of the Chase. A strong likelihood of rain Friday would have drivers lining up by points Saturday if qualifying is rained out, putting Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon on the front row.

Race: Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen – Watkins Glen International Speedway
Date: Sunday, August 9, 2009
Time: 2:18 PM EST (scheduled green flag)

Preview: Watkins Glen is the second of two road course races on the Sprint Cup circuit; the first was California’s Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, won by Kasey Kahne in June. But NASCAR’s Matt Kenseth notes that although both races involve road courses, the similarities pretty much end there: “Watkins Glen is quite a bit different than Sonoma and, of the two, I like racing at Watkins Glen better.

Updated LifeLock.com 400 Odds

Preview: Chicagoland is a relative newcomer to the Cup circuit compared to venerable venues like Martinsville and Richmond. NASCAR has visited this track just once a year since 2001, but it gives the sport an annual presence in a major TV market.

The list of drivers who’ve won here can almost be counted on one hand: Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, and Kyle Busch.

Safe Bets:

1. Tony Stewart (+600): Stewart is the current series points leader, has won two of the past five Cup races, and is coming off a dominating performance at Daytona.

He won in Chicago two years ago, finished fifth here last year, and has accumulated the most driver points at this track over the course of the last five races.

2. Kyle Busch (+700): Busch won this race last year in impressive fashion, starting on the pole and leading 165 of 267 laps.

In just four Chicagoland starts, he’s climbed to fifth on the list of overall lap leaders and is second in the average finish category.

Dark Horse:

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (+3000): Junior had a little pep in his step Thursday after running sixth in practice and qualifying 13th.

He won this race in 2005 and has two top 5s in his last four Chicagoland starts.

Summary: Weather will be a factor the next two days and, although it may clear out by race time, it will leave a green racetrack behind.

Drivers will also be adjusting to a race that begins an hour before sunset and transitions into nighttime.

The race is 301 laps (318 miles) – an extra lap added last year to convey race sponsor Lenox Tools’ desire to “go the extra mile” for race fans.
