Kansas State was expected to enter a rebuilding year of sorts after taking a run at the title game a year ago, while Michigan had their sites set on a championship this season but could not maintain their strong early season play for long and could now have some trouble finding motivation as they find themselves slotted into a lesser bowl game.

The teams will enter this game in very different form as Kansas State won five of its final six games to earn a berth in the postseason, while Michigan dropped four of its final five games.

The last of those losses for Michigan came in an absolute thriller though, as the team combined with Ohio State to put on a heck of show at the Big House. Quarterback Devan Gardner lit up the Buckeye secondary in that one, completing 32 of 45 passes for 451 yards and four scores without an interception, adding a fifth score on the ground.

He connected with top wideout Jeremy Gallon nine times for 175 yards and a score as the Michigan offense put up 41 points, but couldn’t complete a late two-point conversion attempt and fell to Ohio State by a score of 42-41 in a heartbreaker. With another 47 yards in this game, Gallon would set the school’s single-season mark for receiving yards.

Kansas State supporters must not have thought there would be a bowl game in the cards for the team after a 2-4 start to the year, but a strong finish to their regular year has the team in the postseason against a solid opponent. Even looking back, none of those initial four losses was by more than 10 points, so the team must have known there was something there. They’ll need to buck the trend of recent play in bowl games as the team has dropped five in a row. Conversely, Michigan is 20-22 all-time in bowl appearances.

Quarterbacks Jake Waters and Daniel Sams filled in for the departed Collin Klein and combined to throw for 2,650 yards and rush for 1,054 more, and each will get time against Michigan’s defense in Tempe.

The time off should serve Michigan well and allow them to re-gain the form they started the year with, while Kansas State likely would have preferred to play this game three weeks earlier so they could continue to ride the wave of momentum they closed the season with.

The Wolverines are 4-1 ATS in their last five games against Big 12 opponents, while the Wildcats are 0-5 ATS in their last five bowl games.

The play: Michigan +3.5

ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

The Kentucky Wildcats take on their third big test of the year and they are hoping third time is a charm. In their first test Michigan State got out of the gate early and Kentucky never really recovered. In their second test they played Baylor, and it was a back and forth game, but they came up on the short end of the stick.

Now, they play a North Carolina Tar Heels team that has been up and down so far in the young season. In their third game of the season – as -14 point favorites – the Belmont Bears ended up upsetting the Tar Heels at home. But, North Carolina would bounce back by beating the Richmond Spiders and going into Louisville, Kentucky, and beating the Louisville Cardinals as 10 point underdogs.

The good vibrations didn’t last long though as North Carolina ended up  getting upset once again, this time on the road to UAB. But, once again, North Carolina would bounce back as 10 point underdogs and beat the Michigan State Spartans on the road.

Key Numbers:

North Carolina in their last 5 games North Carolina has won straight up in 4 of those games and ATS they are 4-1 as well. Kentucky in their last five games are 4-1 straight up and 2-3 ATS.
[ad-6571516]
Key Players: Freshman Kentucky forward Julius Randle has had a great season so far. He’s averaging 17.8 points per game, and 12 rebounds a game. Freshman guard James Young has been very dynamic himself he’s averaged 13.9 points per game and in his last game he scored 21 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Freshman guards Aaron Harrison and Andrew Harrison are having pretty identical season. Aaron Harrison is scoring 13.8 points per game and Andrew Harrison is scoring 10.3 points per game.

On the other side, sophomore guard Marcus Paige is averaging a team high 18.8 points per game, averaging 3.3 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. Sophomore forward Brice Johnson is pulling down a team high 6.9 rebounds per game and scoring 13.6 points per game. Last, but not least, junior forward James Michael McAdoo is scoring 13.0 points per game, and averaging 5.9 rebounds per game.

Danny’s FREE NCAA Basketball Pick:

All in all, this should be a good game. Both of Kentucky’s losses have come against top 25 teams in the Michigan State Spartans and the Baylor Bears. North Carolina is a top 25 team as well and while they have had a couple of bad losses, they have two great wins as well. It seems as though North Carolina gets up for these big games. I’m looking for North Carolina to get up for this game and they get the job done versus the very talented, but not yet tournament ready Kentucky Wildcats.

Pick: North Carolina Tar Heels -3
