It’s only fitting that the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves would start the second half of the season with a series against each other. These two have battled for the second place position in the NL East all season.
Atlanta has been struggling lately but they won the last two games of their series against the Yankees and are in the thick of it in the NL East race.
The Yankees are riding a 9 game winning streak and last week they swept the Braves in Atlanta. The Yankees now have a 1.5 game lead in the AL East over the Orioles, who took 2 of 3 from the Braves in their last series.
Tonight the Yankees will be going for the sweep against the Braves in Atlanta and with last night’s win they have now won 5 straight and are all alone in first place in the AL East.
The Yankees and the Braves have been two of the most successful franchises in baseball over the last couple decades.
The Yankees have won 3 straight and they remain 1/2 game back of the Rays in the tough AL East. The Braves have been up and down all season and even though they are coming off a loss they are 8-2 in their last 10 games and they only trail the Nationals by 2 games in the NL East.
The Braves did not get off to a good start this season, but have been one of the best teams for the last month or so and now they lead the tough NL East by 1.5 games.
Two of the best teams in the National League square off Saturday night in Saint Louis. The Braves pulled out a 12th inning last night in the series opener.
The Braves have lost to the Phillies 8 straight times including losing last night in Game 1 if this 3 game set and it will be hard for them to break that streak since reigning Cy Young winner Roy Halladay is on the mound for the Phillies.
If moving in the fences was supposed to spark offense at Citi Field the visiting Atlanta Braves certainly didn’t get the memo.
The Atlanta Braves were in prime position to lock-up their second-straight wildcard playoff berth in the National League last season, but a complete collapse down the stretch paved the way for St. Louis’s amazing run to a World Series title.
