Sports News – NBA news: Clipper players paid for ex-coach’s cancer surgery

Clipper players paid for ex-coach’s cancer surgery

Even with the rise of Blake Griffin, the Los Angeles Clippers continuously find ways to be a joke. Earlier this week, the news came out that owner Donald Sterling “didn’t know anything” about Elgin Baylor’s accomplishment’s as a (Hall-of-Fame) player before firing him.

The latest Clipper news: the team refused to play for then-assistant coach Kim Hughes’ prostate cancer surgery in 2004. Corey Maggette, Elton Brand, Chris Kaman and Marko Jaric paid the approximately $70,000 worth of medical bills. The team wouldn’t pay because Hughes had sought a second opinion that would’ve let him have the procedure sooner.

NCAA basketball news: Kyrie Irving to play Friday? Obama picks all No. 1 seeds for Final Four

Could Kyrie Irving return this Friday for round one of the NCAA Tournament and make Duke all the more dangerous? The guard hasn’t played since injuring his toe on December 4. He practiced with Duke on Tuesday and has a shot to join the lineup against Hampton on Friday.

U.S. President Barack Obama filled out his March Madness bracket for a third straight year. He correctly picked North Carolina as the 2009 champ but missed on his Kansas pick last year. This season, he has all four No. 1 seeds, Ohio State, Kansas, Duke and Pittsburgh, reaching the Final Four. For the record, so do I. Maybe I should run for president.

MLB news: Jason Heyward sits with back injury; Braves coach loses eye; Ian Snell retires; Chris Davis demands playing time or trade

Atlanta Braves sophomore and budding phenom Jason Heyward is having trouble getting his season started. He’s missed four straight exhibition games with a back injury. Apparently, he has “less cartilage” than most people between his disks, but doctors say he can rectify the problem by stretching more.

Atlanta Braves minor league manager Luis Salazar lost his left eye this week after numerous surgical procedures failed to save it. He was struck in the face by a line drive off Brian McCann’s bat earlier this spring and suffered multiple facial fractures. The damage to his eye was too extensive to save it.

Ian Snell flashed brilliance as a big-league starter, striking out 177 batters in 2007 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he never found his groove after that. He went 0-5 with a 6.41 ERA as a Seattle Mariner last year and decided to retire this week rather than report to the St. Louis Cardinals’ minor-league camp.

Enigmatic but powerful slugger Chris Davis wants to play in the majors or get traded. He said this week that, if the Rangers don’t put him on the Opening Day roster, he’ll request a trade. Right now, he’s considered a long shot to make the team.

NFL news: Randy Moss reaches out to Patriots again; Chad Ochocinco ordered to reimburse clothing store; AP in hot water over slavery comment

Randy Moss won’t stop expressing his love for the New England Patriots. The 34-year-old receiver, who was traded from New England to Minnesota and then to Tennessee during the 2010 season, wants to return to Foxboro. He said this week: “If you ask me where my heart and where I’m happy is… I love Tom Brady and I love playing for coach Belichick.”

Is Chad Ochocinco a thief? He was ordered this week by a judge to play nearly $12,000 to the clothing store Exclusive Wear in Cincinnati after he “purchased” the merchandise but never paid for it. He was reportedly given ample notice to pay his bill.

Adrian Peterson ruffled some feathers this week when he said the NFL labor dispute was “modern-day slavery” and that the players were getting robbed. His agent released a statement later saying that people shouldn’t take AP’s comments word by word.” OK, then. How should we take those words?
