Sports News – NHL news: Winnipeg mayor doesn’t think Coyotes are coming home; Holmgren thinks Jeff Carter will play against Boston; Mike Gillis fined for criticizing refs

Winnipeg mayor doesn’t think Coyotes are coming home

Some people believe the Phoenix Coyotes’ move back to Winnipeg is as good as done – but not Winnipeg mayor Sam Katz. He told TSN that he believes “the Coyotes will stay in Phoenix and they will do everything they can, because I happen to know some of the commitments that were made when they went there. And there were commitments that – if they were not fulfilled – there could easily be a lawsuit. So I think you have to start looking at some of the other potential franchises.”

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren thinks Jeff Carter will suit up against Boston at some point in the Eastern Conference semifinal. Carter, who led the Flyers with 36 goals in the regular season, hasn’t played since injuring his knee in Game 4 of the first round against Buffalo.

Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis has been fined  an undisclosed amount for criticizing the refereeing in the Canucks-Blackhawks series. After six games, Gillis said that the Hawks had received 75 per cent of the power plays in the series.

NBA news: Nick Young won’t take hometown discount; Knicks exercise Chauncey Billups’ option

Nick Young broke out for 17.4 points per game with the Washington Wizards this season. Washington obviously wants to lock the swingman up to a long-term deal – but it won’t get a hometown discount. The restricted free agent Young said “My mama told me, never leave nothing on the table.”

With Raymond Felton now in Denver after the Carmelo Anthony trade, the New York Knicks naturally have to keep Chauncey Billups as their starting point guard. They exercised Billups’ $14.2-million option on Wednesday. The 34-year-old former NBA Finals MVP averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 assists in 21 games for the Knicks this season but missed three of four playoff games with a knee injury.

MLB news: Phil Hughes may have circulatory problem; Delmon Young placed on DL; Roger McDowell apologizes for incident with fan; Oswalt leaves Phillies over tornado concerns back home

The New York Yankees continue to investigate the mystery behind starting pitcher Phil Hughes’ dead arm. After hours of testing yesterday, doctors believe he might have a low-level risk of thoracic outlet syndrome, which is a circulatory disorder. It can be treated with rehab or surgery.

The Minnesota Twins just can’t escape the injury bug. With Joe Mauer already on the shelf, they’ve placed Delmon Young on the 15-day DL with a nagging rib injury. He had no homers and six RBI in 16 games after knocking in 112 runs last year.

Atlanta Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell apologized Wednesday after a surprising run-in with a fan over the weekend. During a Braves/Giants game, Giants fan Justin Quinn said he shouted at McDowell after McDowell made some inappropriate sexual gestures. McDowell then grabbed a bat and threatened Quinn and his family. McDowell said he was “deeply sorry” for his reaction.

Roy Oswalt has left the Philadelphia Phillies to return to his family in his storm-torn home state of Mississippi. Ten people have been killed by the tornado wave that swept the South earlier this week and Oswalt’s home is in the danger zone.

Quick Andre Ethier update: he extended his hit streak to 24 games with a fourth-inning single yesterday against Florida.

NFL news: Jason Hunter stabbed by girlfriend; Peyton Hillis is the Madden 12 cover boy

How many bad breaks can the Denver Broncos get? The latest: defensive end Jason Hunter was stabbed by his girlfriend and hospitalized Tuesday night in Detroit. The injuries are not life-threatening and Hunter doesn’t plan to press charges.

How hard would you have laughed a year ago if someone told you Peyton Hillis would adorn the cover of the hugely popular video game Madden 12? The bruising Browns running back won a 32-player bracket that saw almost 13 million votes cast, beating out Michael Vick in the final.
