Sports News – NBA news: Pistons finally show John Kuester the door; Brad Miller out six months after surgery

Pistons finally show John Kuester the door

John Kuester is finally out of his misery in the Motor City. During two seasons as the Detroit Pistons head coach, he compiled a 57-107 record and clashed with players to the point where he was left with six bodies for a game after half the team boycotted during this past season.

Houston Rockets center Brad Miller underwent microfracture surgery in mid-May and is expected to require six months of recovery time. The 35-year-old averaged 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds last season.

MLB news: Jake Peavy returns to DL; Pirates to pick Cole first overall; Zambrano sounds off on Cubs; Belt breaks wrist

It appears Jake Peavy’s triumphant return from injury was short lived. At least his latest malady isn’t arm-related. He strained his groin in Sunday’s start versus the Detroit Tigers and will likely be placed in the 15-day disabled list.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to take pitcher Gerrit Cole with the first overall pick in today’s Major League Baseball Draft. The 20-year-old righthander out of UCLA has a fastball consistently clocked in the high 90s and occasionally in the triple digits. Cole was 6-8 with a 3.32 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 114.3 innings with the Bruins this season.

You have to wonder if the writing is on the wall for Carlos Zambrano as a Chicago Cub. Big Z sounded off after the Cubs’ sixth straight loss on Sunday, which ended with a walkoff homer by Albert Pujols (his second in as many games).

Zambrano said the Cubs play like a “Triple-A team” and that they were “embarrassing.” He also blamed the loss on not Carlos Marmol serving up the homer to Pujols but on his pitch selection for Ryan Theriot, who doubled home the tying run in the ninth.

San Francisco Giants hitting prospect Brandon Belt’s transition to the bigs has been grounded again. He had already missed four games after taking a Trevor Miller pitch off the wrist last Tuesday. Then, an MRI revealed a fracture. He is only expected to miss a couple weeks.

NHL news: Rick Dudley out as Winnipeg GM

The Atlanta Thrashers are off to Winnipeg – but their general manager isn’t. Rick Dudley will not be retained as the new Winnipeg team’s GM. The new ownership “decided to go in another direction with the position of general manager of our team,” said mark Chipman, chairman of True North Sports and Entertainment, Ltd.

NFL news: Plaxico Burress released from prison; John Henry Johnson dies; Percy Harvin misses workout, blames cell phone

Plaxico Burress is a free man. After serving 20 months in prison for carry a concealed weapon and accidentally shooting himself in a nightclub, the wide receiver was released today.

“I just want to thank God for bringing me through one of the most trying times in my life. It’s a beautiful day,” Burress said. “As far as football is concerned, if and when everything gets settled and they get back on the field, I’ll be ready.”

Burress has drawn interest from the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and St. Louis Rams.

Hall-of-Famer and four-time Pro Bowler John Henry Johnson is dead at 81 years old after succumbing to an extended illness. The running back was fourth on the NFL’s all-time rushing list when he retired in 1966 and was a star with the San Francisco 49ers before also playing with Detroit, Pittsburgh and Houston.

Percy Harvin recently missed workouts organized by Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback Christian Ponder. The reason: his cell phone “didn’t receive the call” from Ponder. Interesting. Fellow wideouts Sidney Rice and Bernard Berrian didn’t attend, nor did tight end Visanthe Shiancoe.
