NFL news: Sterger won’t sue NFL if it disciplines Favre; consecutive starts streak in jeopardy?

Sterger Won't Sue NFL "IF"

Brett Favre keeps on keepin’ on, playing game after game despite his injuries, but obstacles keep getting in the way of his consecutive starts streak.

First off, there’s his alleged “sexting” victim, Jenn Sterger. She has officially stated that she won’t pursue any legal action against Brett Favre as long as the league suspends him. Um, good luck with that, Jenn. I strongly doubt the NFL will end its golden boy’s career by suspending him.

Even if Favre dodges the suspension axe, his shoulder injury could finally end his iron man streak this weekend. He hasn’t practiced all-week and looks like a game-time decision right now.

NBA news: Devin Harris out with sprained shoulder; Kings assistant Mario Elie arrested

Winning isn’t easy for the New Jersey nets and it’s about to get even tougher. Devin Harris, who averages 16.3 points per game for them this season, took a bad spill yesterday and sprained his shoulder. It’s too early to tell how severe it is.

Remember Mario Elie? From the 1994 and 1995 champion Houston Rockets teams? He’s an assistant coach with Sacramento now. And he got arrested early Thursday morning after police pulled him over for a broken taillight; he was breathalysed and revealed to be over the legal limit. Hey – if we were coaching the Kings this year, most of us would probably reach for the bottle, too.

MLB news: Rangers make offer to Cliff Lee; Orioles acquire J.J. Hardy

The big news stemming from the MLB winter meetings is slowing down but a few noteworthy things have happened around baseball over the last 24 hours. Before we assume the Yankees will land Cliff Lee – the Texas Rangers have made him a “substantial” offer. Team owner Chuck Greenberg travelled to Lee’s native Arkansas yesterday and presented Lee with a “menu of multiple offers” designed to give him several different attractive options.

The Baltimore Orioles continue to add veterans this offseason. Yesterday, they acquired shortstop J.J. Hardy and infielder Brendan Harris (plus $500,000) from the Twins for minor-league pitchers Jim Hoey and Brett Jacobson. Hardy batted just .268 with six homers in 101 games last year but has flashed power in the past. He had 26-homer and 24-homer seasons with the Brewers in 2007 and 2008.

NCAA football news: Cam Newton dominates College Football Awards show

If the 2010 College Football Awards show was any indication, Cameron Newton will run away with the Heisman Trophy. The Auburn quarterback won the Davey O’Brien Award (top quarterback), the Maxwell Award (best all-around player) and the Walter Camp Player of the year award.

Among other awards handed out, LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson won the Chuck Bednarik Award (best defensive player) and the Jim Thorpe Award (top defensive back), becoming the first player to win both of those awards since Charles Woodson in 1997. Oregon’s LaMichael James won the Doak Walker Award as the country’s top running back; Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State captured the Biletnikoff Award for top receiver.

The Heisman Trophy finalists for Saturday’s ceremony are Newton, James, Stanford’s Andrew Luck and Boise State’s Kellen Moore.
