The Tampa Buccaneers tangle with the Washington Redskins this Sunday afternoon in a matchup of two teams fighting for their playoff lives. Kickoff from FedEX Field in Landover is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast regionally on FOX.

Tampa Bay had its chances last week against NFC South division-leader Atlanta, but a late Josh Freeman interception on a potential game winning drive sealed a 28-24 for the 10-2 Falcons. The loss was extremely painful for the Buccaneers, who were a three-point home underdog, as they now find themselves at 7-5 straight-up on the year (8-4 against the spread) and two games behind Atlanta and one game behind New Orleans in the division. This was the second loss of the season to the Falcons and they have already lost their first game of the year to the Saints.

Adding to the Bucs woes is the loss of two more starters as both center Jeff Faine and cornerback Aqib Talib were put on the Injured Reserve list this week with season-ending injuries. Two weeks ago they lost guard Davin Joseph and safety Cody Grimm for the year, so two key areas of the team are all of a sudden critically depleted. NFL Betting

Tampa has already been holding things together with some rubber bands and string with an offense that is ranked 23rd overall and averaging just 20.2 points per game. Its 15th ranked defense has been a tad better, but is still ranked 26th against the run. Fortunately the Bucs are facing a team that has one of the worst rushing offenses in the league.

Washington’s season began with so much hope and high expectations, but those dreams have turned into the harsh reality of four losses in its last five games including a devastating 31-7 loss to the Giants last week as a seven-point road underdog. The loss dropped the Redskins to 5-7 SU (5-6-1 ATS) and barring a miracle, out of any serious contention to make it into the playoffs.

This team has been plagued with distractions all season long and things finally came to a head this week with its biggest one; DT Albert Haynesworth. Head coach Mike Shanahan had finally had enough of his antics and decided to suspend the over-priced free agent bust for the remainder of the season. That certainly will not help a defense that is ranked 23rd in points allowed and dead last in the league overall. The Redskins’ offense has not played much better as of late, averaging just 18.5 points over the past five games so you have to wonder how much juice this team has left in the tank to get through the last four games.

Trends:

Tampa Bay is 5-1 ATS in its last six games and 5-0 ATS this season on the road. The total has gone ‘over’  in six of its last 10 games overall.
Washington is 1-4 ATS in its last five games and 1-2-1 ATS in its last four games at home. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of its last six games overall.

Head-to-head, these two teams have met three times in the last four years with the Buccaneers winning twice both SU and ATS. Last season the Redskins won at home 16-13, but failed to cover as a 9 ½ point favorite. The total stayed well ‘under’ the 36 point line.

Tampa still has a legitimate shot at making the postseason as long as it wins this game. Washington is very close to folding much like they last season, after putting up the good fight for the first 13 weeks. Stick with the Bucs to put the final nail into the coffin of the Redskins 2010 season.

The Pick: Tampa Bay -2 and UNDER.
