Sports News – NBA news: Carlos Boozer has turf toe; Warriors to fire Keith Smart? Rockets courting Kevin McHale

Carlos Boozer has turf toe

Carlos Boozer felt a pop in his right foot during the Chicago Bulls’ series-clinching victory over the Indiana Pacers last night. The bruising forward was in considerable pain and missed the final 18 minutes. The injury is reportedly turf toe. Boozer averaged 17.5 points during the regular season but sits at just 10.0 for the playoffs, because of foul trouble and the injury.

Are the Golden State Warriors about to can their coach? Rumor has it that Keith Smart could be fired as early as today. He led Golden State to a 36-46 record this season – a 10-game improvement from the previous year.

The Houston Rockets have begun their search for a new head coach and Kevin McHale reportedly tops their list. He coached the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2005 and 2008-09. Other candidates include former Rockets guard Sam Cassell, ex-Oklahoma and Indiana University coach Kelvin Sampson, Mavericks assistant Dwane Casey, former Hawks coach Mike Woodson and former Cavs coach Mike Brown.

MLB news: Johan Santana out until August? Andre Ethier extends hit streak; Closer-by-committee for Dodgers?

As desperate as the New York Mets are to have Johan Santana back on the mound, his timetable to return from shoulder surgery may be even longer than originally expected. They hoped to see him by June or July but ESPN.com reports that August or September looks more realistic now.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier’s hit streak lives on. He smacked an RBI double in the first inning of Tuesday’s game against the Marlins. Kudos to him for always getting the monkey off his back early in games. Ethier, who is hitting .412 during the streak, broke the MLB record for the longest hitting streak in April. The man he surpassed: his former manager, Joe Torre, who had a 22-game streak with St. Louis in 1972.

Sticking with the Dodgers, are they the latest team to implement a closer-by-committee? The situation is muddy. General manager Ned Colletti told an L.A. radio station that the team will mix in guys like Hong-Chi Kuo and Vicente Padilla while Jonathan Broxton tries to sort himself out. But Broxton said Tuesday that manager Don Mattingly told him he’d remain the closer. Time will tell which story is true.

NFL news: Peyton Manning admits to faking concussion tests; Chad Ochocinco says his “time is up” with Bengals; Haynesworth indicted on sexual abuse charge; Martz nixes extension

Of all the quarterbacks to potentially do it, who would’ve pegged Peyton Manning as a guy who would come forward and admit to fudging his concussion test results?

“After a concussion, you take the same test and if you do worse than you did on the first test, you can’t play,” Manning recently explained. “So I just try to do badly on the first test.” Apparently, many other players intentionally bomb their first tests to make it easier to pass tests later in the season.

Not surprisingly, especially with rumors of the Bengals drafting A.J. Green, Chad Ochocinco tweeted yesterday that “My time is up” with Cincinnati. He also said that Green “would be perfect” for the Bengals and that “I love Cincy, but coach [Marvin] Lewis is mean to me now so I think I am gone.”

Albert Haynesworth was indicted yesterday on a misdemeanor charge for sexual abuse stemming from an incident at a Washington hotel in February. He allegedly fondled a waitress’ breast after finishing his meal at the W hotel. He could face six months in prison if convicted.

Chicago Bears offensive co-ordinator “Mad” Mike Martz recently turned down a one-year contract extension after they didn’t offer him a raise. The more interesting issue here is that the Bears want to extend a co-ordinator that led them to the league’s 30th-ranked offense in 2010.
