Two surging teams meet at MTS Centre on Wednesday night when the Ottawa Senators who have gone 5-0-1 during their current seven game road trip pay visit to the Winnipeg Jets who have gone 6-2-2 in their last 10 games.

Both teams are in the thick of their respective playoff races – the Sens now sit just six points behind Boston for the second Wild Card spot in the East while the Jets currently own the last playoff spot in the West. Ottawa is 7-2-1 against the Jets since the franchise moved from Atlanta and has won all four matchups between the teams in Winnipeg.

Ottawa

The Ottawa Senators five game win streak came to an end last night with a 3-2 shootout loss in Minnesota – that’s five wins in their last six games away from home. The Senators have allowed seven goals in their past six games as they make a charge toward a playoff spot.

They have been terrific lately but could be a tired team after playing last night.

The biggest story for Ottawa has been the play of rookie goaltender Andrew Hammond who won his first five starts after being pressed into action because of injuries to Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner. He had a 1.00 GAA before giving up two last night to Minnesota.

As well as Hammond has been, it will be Craig Anderson that returns to the crease for the first times in six weeks. Anderson is 4-0-1 with a 2.36 GAA in his last five starts between these two teams.

Anderson is 11-2-3 against Winnipeg in his career, posting a 2.40 goals-against average and .935 save percentage.

Offensively the Senators continue to be a middle-of-the-pack team which is OK when they are getting the goaltending they have enjoyed lately. Bobby Ryan has 10 points in 9 games, Mark Stone has 10 points in 10 games, rookie Mike Hoffman continues to shine and has eight goals and nine assists in 16 games and Erik Karlsson has three points in two games.

Ottawa looks like a pretty balanced team right now – fatigue could slow them down however and there is a question of how Craig Anderson will play in his first game since January 21.

Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Jets haven’t played since Sunday – they are 2-0-1 during a three game home stand including an impressive 5-2 home win against Los Angeles last time out.

Like the Sens, they have ridden an unheralded goaltender lately – Michael Hutchinson is 5-0-3 in his last eight starts with a 2.37 GAA. He is 1-0-1 in his last two with a 1.44 GAA and .939 save percentage.

The Jets offense broke out against the Kings Sunday – 5 goals against a pretty good defensive club. That offense will get a boost Wednesday when trade deadline acquisition Lee Stempniak makes his Jets debut.

Blake Wheeler, Stempniak’s probable line-mate has five points in five games and Michael Frolik has four points in his last four. Stempniak joins an offense that has been led by Andrew Ladd who has four goals and three assists in his last seven games – Ladd however has just one goal in 10 games against Ottawa!

NHL Gambling Trends

• Over is 20-6-1 in OTT last 27 Wed. games.
• Over is 21-7-3 in WIN last 31 overall.
• Under is 6-2 in WIN last 8 Wed. games.
• Over is 10-4-2 in WIN last 16 home games.
• Road team is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Both teams in this matchup are desperate clubs – a loss by either team would have significant implications in the standings. Both teams are playing very well lately but neither can afford to take their foot off the gas.

Ottawa and Craig Anderson have been owned the Jets lately – the Sens four straight wins in Winnipeg is the number that jumps out at me.

Despite playing last night and being the huge dog in this game, I’m taking Ottawa to reward me handsomely this evening.

Watch as they rally around Craig Anderson and eek out a win, possibly in extra time.
