Two teams with playoff intentions bolstered their rosters at the trade deadline and look to showcase the right form going into spring hockey.

Both clubs improved their rosters recently, though the Rangers crave a return to health and form of superstar goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who has been recovering from a damaged artery in his neck after taking a puck in the throat last month.

New faces include offensively-minded blueliners; Marek Zidlicky for Detroit and the belle of the ball, PP-quarterback Keith Yandle for New York.

The Rangers had to give up plenty to get Yandle – super-prospect Anthony Duclair, John Scott and a pick – but he gives New York the deepest blueline in the NHL.

Combined with serviceable play from goalie Cam Talbot (filling in for King Henrik) and Rick Nash’s explosive campaign, and the Rangers have been a-OK.

Detroit, on the other hand, is just always good. They never seem to recede in the background thanks to constantly shrewd moves from the Red Wings’ front office. Zidlicky will help with his offense on the back end and he got to leave a sinking ship in New Jersey.

The veteran is just spoiling the power play; the Red Wings already ranked first in the league in power-play percentage (converting 25% of the time).

Detroit’s 81 points are good for third in the Atlantic division, which is not bad, but it means the Wings must keep their game sharp in the last month or so of the season.

It helps that the Wings always have the best European scouts in the business. Veterans like Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg join with upstarts like Tomas Tatar (25 goals) and Gustav Nyquist to ensure Detroit’s offense is robust.

The Wings have had solid goaltending from Jimmy Howard and Jonas Gustavsson, and passable ‘tending from backup Petr Mrazek in 2014-15, but it is Detroit’s propensity to score that has led it to success.

If the goals don’t dry up, the Red Wings will be a force to be reckoned with in the postseason.

With New York’s acquisitions, the Rangers are probably the favorite in the East now. The road doesn’t get any easier for them; tonight’s tricky game against the Wings is buttressed by a trip to Chicago on Sunday to take on the Blackhawks.

Both teams are riding high recently – the two clubs last games played were both victories against the solid Nashville Predators.

4* FREE NHL Pick: Detroit 4, New York 3

This is a tough game to call, but I like Detroit in this one, with the aftermath being a brief re-group for the Rangers before they travel to Chi-town and take care of business on the weekend.
