Denver began the 2009 season going undefeated in their first six games under first-year head coach Josh McDaniel, before fading later in the season finishing second in the AFC West with an 8-8 record.

Can the Broncos show consistency and focus in 2010?

Much of that depends on quarterback Kyle Orton who appears to have won the starting role, at least for now. Orton is not a spectacular QB but for the most part is a steady arm with a good understanding of the playbook and cool under pressure. He looked good in preseason and should be more comfortable under center this campaign.

He will be without Brandon Marshall but will have plenty of targets with Eric Decker, Thomas, Gaffney , Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley and Matt Willis, who if are on their game should shred the Jacksonville secondary.

Orton should also have plenty of time to survey the field as the Jags defensive line was awful and there’s not much new to prevent a repeat. It posted the fifth-worst sack total in NFL history a year ago.

The Broncos running game leaves a lot to be desired, but if Knowshon Morenocan remains fully healthy, he should post his first 1,000 yard season as a Bronco. Correll Buckhalter and Peyton Hillis round out the depth and should see action as change of pace backs to further disrupt any success the Jacksonville front four may have.

Much like the Bronco’s the Jaguars experienced their own late season meltdown finishing a disappointing 7-9 and out of a postseason appearance for the second consecutive season.

David Garrard will get coach Jack Del Rio’s call by default, as Garrard has been far from impressive over the last few campaigns. He will need step up his game and decrease the INTs (10 in 2009) if he wants to keep backup Luke McCown from taking his job.

But it won’t be easy as he faces a solid Broncos secondary that includes Pro Bowler Champ Bailey and Andre’ Goodman, who combined for eight of the teams 17 interceptions in 2009.

So of the Jags want to be successful, they will need to unleash powerhouse RB Maurice Jones-Drew on the Broncos aging defensive line. Drew rushed for nearly 1,400 yards and scored 16 touchdowns in 2009 and shows no signs of slowing. With a decent O-line anchored by tackles Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton, he should chew up some decent yardage on Sunday.

Both  teams has a long way to go to get back to first place division finishes, and you can expect both Del Rio and McDaniels to be mixing and matching players on both sides of the ball in an effort to try and find the right combination.

The last time the teams met in 2008, Jacksonville won 24-17 at Invesco Field. This time I think the Broncos, who have made the necessary changes to improve on last year’s problem areas, come away with a huge win in the season opener, while Jacksonville still needs more time to improve.
