Georgia
The Georgia Bulldogs have been a big disappointment the last couple of years and Mark Richt is really starting to feel the pressure. The team started the 2010 in style with a big win over Louisiana Lafayette. This will be their first real test of the year.
The Georgia offense is led by a strong offensive line and two impressive running backs in Caleb King and Washaun Ealey. Aaron Murray is the new starter at quarterback and he will likely be the key to how far this team goes in 2010. Murray had a nice season opener, but the defense he faced wasn’t even close to what he will face in this one. Georgia should be able to run the football on just about everyone this year, but in order for this offense to be good enough for them to contend, they must stay balanced.
The Georgia defense was previously a big strength, but of late it has become a weakness. The defensive line has been so weak that the team decided to switch to a 3-4 defense in 2010. No matter what kind of defense they play, they will need to stop the run better in order to be effective. The secondary is solid and they should hold their own this year.
The special teams are great for the Bulldogs as they have the nation’s top punter in Drew Butler and one of the top kicker’s in Blair Walsh.
South Carolina
Steve Spurrier’s team has been another squad that has disappointed many times in the past few years. It seems that every time you think they are about to take off up the standings, they have a big letdown and finish with a similar record again. The Gamecocks got off to a great start last week against Southern Miss, but they’ll need to sustain that effort all year long.
Stephen Garcia is the key to how this offense fares against SEC competition this year. Garcia has been much maligned in his tenure at South Carolina, but he did look good in their season opener. Marcus Lattimore is an extremely talented freshman running back that will definitely help the running game in a big way this year. Garcia has some of the best wide receivers in the SEC with Alshon Jeffrey leading the way. The offensive line is a big question mark, and they’ll need to hold up their end if this team is going to surprise this season.
The Gamecocks defense is hurt by the loss of Eric Norwood, but there is still plenty of talent on this team. The secondary is tremendous. The cornerback tandem of Gilmore and Auguste may well be the best in all of the SEC. The safeties are also solid. The Gamecocks should be very solid against the pass, but they’ll need the front seven to be effective against the run as well. This defensive unit should be a strength for South Carolina in 2010.
The Pick:
Georgia will miss AJ Green in this game and I believe South Carolina’s running game will be the difference. The Gamecocks should be able to run against this Bulldogs defense, and I think the home field advantage will be a big boost as well. South Carolina -3 is the play in this one.
