Mississippi

I had Mississippi marked as my number one overrated team going into the year, but I’ll be the first to admit I did not see their loss against Jacksonville State coming. Houston Nutt and his team must regroup right away, and the good news for them is they have a weak opponent in the second week of the season.

The current quarterback situation is a bit cloudy for the Rebels as Nutt is playing both Nathan Stanley and Oregon transfer Jeremiah Masoli. In the long run I would expect Masoli to receive the majority of the playing time because of his ability to create plays. Brandon Bolden is a running back with all the tools to be successful in 2010, but the interior of the offensive line is a pretty big question mark for Ole Miss. The Rebels aren’t nearly as deep at wide receiver as most teams in the SEC. There are pieces here for the offense to be successful, but there are also more holes than most top schools have.

The Rebels defense is interesting because they have one of the best defensive lines in the country, but the secondary is very weak. Kentrell Lockett and Jerrell Powe are stars on the line and they should play on Sunday’s before too long. The cornerbacks are both inexperienced and that showed in their shocking loss to Jacksonville State last week. College Football

Tulane

The Tulane Green Wave started their season off with a win over Southeastern Louisiana. It was Tulane’s first win in their opening game since 2002, but it wasn’t a pretty win, and the competition was extremely weak. This is a team that has a long ways to go to being competitive against quality teams.

The Green Wave offense is led by a solid quarterback in Ryan Griffin. Griffin gives the team a solid passing threat, but you have to wonder if he has enough weapons around him to be successful. Tulane doesn’t return a single player who gained over 100 yards on the ground last year, so the running back spot is a huge question mark. The receivers are adequate to get the job done. They are led by Casey Robottom, who had 50 catches a year ago.

The biggest issue for Tulane will likely be their defense. Only one starter returns from their front seven, so you can expect teams to be able to run the football consistently on an inexperienced front. In 2009 they allowed 205 yards on the ground per game, and this year it could get even worse. Shakiel Smith is a star at the free safety position, and I expect him to make a ton of noise this year.

Tulane ranked 119th in the nation in turnover margin in 2009, so that is a huge issue that Bob Toledo’s team must address this year. This team doesn’t have enough talent to cost itself games with mishaps.

The Pick:

I really don’t like the Mississippi Rebels chances of having a great year, but I do think they are in a nice bounce back position here. Tulane is a very poor team right now, and the Rebels have way more talent than they do. I expect them to run the ball effectively and force turnovers against this Tulane team. The Rebels -20.5 is the play here.

Mississippi vs. Tulane Score Prediction: Mississippi 38 Tulane 13
