The Philadelphia Eagles really couldn’t have asked for much more in their week one game. The Eagles will get to kick off their season at home against one of the worst teams in the NFL from a season ago.

The comforts of home and an offense that promises to be one of the most dynamic and fun to watch all year.

Nick Foles enters his first season as the Eagles’ starter after putting up MVP type numbers last year (2,891 yds – 27 TD – 2 INT in 13 games – 10 starts) after taking over for Michael Vick.

Let’s look a bit closer at how these two teams stack up

Eagles

Philly’s offense is blindingly fast. Their play makers include speedy and elusive running backs LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles; Jeremy Maclin returns from an ACL injury that kept him out last season and should fill in nicely for DeSean Jackson’s departure.

Add to that talented group, coach Chip Kelly keeps this offense humming at breakneck speed in the no-huddle all game long and never takes his foot off the gas.

Since 2008 the Eagles are 5-1 in openers, with their only loss coming in 2010 to the eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers.

This team always seems to storm out of the gate and put big numbers on the board in week one before anyone has had a chance to study film on them.

They’re healthy across the board on offense with the exception of WR Riley Cooper who is nursing a foot ailment but is expected to suit up and play.

A linebacker group that includes Connor Barwin, DeMeco Ryans, Mychal Kendricks and Trent Cole will make life miserable for the Jags in the run game, especially with no Maurice Jones-Drew.

Jaguars

QB Chad Henne looks like the guy for now, as third overall pick Blake Bortles will be holding the clipboard to open the season. Henne’s options will be in short supply as MoJo has left town for Oakland and journeyman Toby Gerhart is expected to carry the load with Ben Tate platooning at the running back position.

At receiver it doesn’t get too much better; Cecil Shorts III was one of the rare bright spots last season, but he sat out most of this preseason with hamstring trouble and standout Justin Blackmon is suspended indefinitely for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The Jags defense was fourth worst in the league against the run last year and will be tasked with stopping the NFL’s leading rusher from a season ago in the Eagles’ LeSean McCoy.

In their last six seasons the Jaguars are 2-4 in opening week games, and last year was the ugliest loss of the bunch – a 28-2 beat down at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Recent NFL Point Spread & O/U Trends

  • JAC are 12-3 ATS in their last 15 games in Week 1.
  • Over is 6-2 in JAC last 8 games on grass.
  • JAC are 6-14-1 ATS in their last 21 games overall.
  • PHI are 6-21-1 ATS in their last 28 home games.
  • Under is 6-2 in PHI last 8 home games.

Week 1 NFL Jags vs Eagles Free Pick

While the double digit spreads can always seem a bit daunting at first glance, this 10.5 point edge for the Eagles seems like it shouldn’t be any problem for them.

Jacksonville’s limited weapons on offense combined with a defense that is going to be on their heels and on the field a lot is going to make for a pretty lopsided game.

4* Play On Eagles -10.5 (-105)

Chip Kelly loves to run up the score; he did it with Oregon and he’s done it with the Eagles. If they get up big at half don’t expect him to pull his starters out too quick. This one could get ugly.
