In a battle of backups, No. 15 Arizona will look to stay in the chase for a PAC-10 title when it faces off against a struggling UCLA team that has dropped two consecutive games including an embarrassing 60-13 pounding by Oregon last Thursday night.

Making his first start in more than a year, Matt Scott turned in a solid performance replacing injured quarterback Nick Foles, leading the Wildcats to a 44-14 rout over Washington on Saturday night.

No. 15 Arizona will be without their starting quarterback for the second straight week, but have to being feeling a bit more at ease after Scott’s recent outing.

The junior hit 18-of-22 passing for 233 yards and two touchdowns, just one week after playing nearly three quarters completing 14 of 20 passes for 139 yards and surviving five sacks in a 24-7 win over Washington State.

Scott will now face a weary UCLA defense that was shredded by the Ducks its last time out and has yielded more than 300 passing yards in two of the past three games. On the ground, it doesn’t get any better as the Bruins have allowed opposing rushers to gain a combined 574 yards during their back-to-back defeats.

To make matters worse UCLA is also dealing with its own injury problems with starting quarterback Kevin Prince out for the season after undergoing right knee surgery this past Saturday. His replacement Richard Brehaut, who has appeared in four contests this season, is yet to throw his first touchdown, but has rushed for two including one against Oregon, while completing 16-of-23 passes for 159 yards and an interception.

The UCLA passing attack continues to spiral downward and now ranks 117th out of 120 FBS teams and is last in efficiency.

It’s hard to imagine the Bruins improving those numbers against the Pac-10’s best defense, which is giving up just over 13 points and 285 yards per game.

The Wildcats have held opponents to less than 15 points five times this season, and has held UCLA under that same mark in the last two of its three consecutive wins in the series. UCLA however, owns the all-time series lead, 19-13-2.

The game is likely to be won by the team that can best control the ground game, both offensively and defensively

Scott will get support from running backs Nic Grisby, who had a pair of TDs in last week’s win, and Keola Antolin who had another two while compiling a season-high 114 yards.

Meanwhile, Brehaut’s supporting backfield of Johnathan Franklin and Derrick Coleman, were held to a combined 93 yards on 28 carries and no scores in the team’s loss to Oregon.

With a suffocating defense and better running game, I just don’t see how UCLA can win this one.
