Michigan

The Wolverines started the season 5-0, but they lost their last two games at home against Michigan State and Iowa. Rich Rodriguez and his team have had two weeks to get ready for this big test in Happy Valley. Penn State isn’t as good as normal, but a night game in Happy Valley is always a very difficult environment.

Denard Robinson left the Iowa game with a shoulder injury, but he says he is 100% and ready to go this weekend. Robinson has been one of the most explosive players in the country so far this year. He is a run first type of quarterback, but he has the ability to beat you with his arm as well. Robinson is averaging an amazing eight yards per carry in 2010, and he is a serious threat to go the distance every time he takes off. The receivers at Michigan are a deep and talented group. The offensive line is a much improved group and this offense as a whole is one of the best in the nation.

The Michigan defense has held them back in the last few years, and this season is no different. Michigan is allowing a stunning 441 yards per game so far this year. The pass defense is one of the worst in the country, and the rushing defense is no better than mediocre. The safety position is particularly weak, as two starters are out for the year with injuries. This defense must improve for Michigan to beat the best teams in the conference.

Penn State

The Nittany Lions have been a pretty big disappointment this year. Fans knew there would be some struggles this season, but it has been worse than expected in Happy Valley. The 20 point home loss to Illinois in their last game at home was embarrassing. Can Joe Paterno’s team bounce back against a quality Michigan team?

Rob Bolden is the true freshman quarterback for this team, but he is questionable for this Saturday’s game because of a head injury. The biggest disappointment on the Penn State team has to be the running game. Evan Royster was considered the Big Ten’s best back going into this year, but he has just 450 yards this year, and the running game is one of the worst in the conference. The offensive line has had endless problems, and if they don’t start playing better this team will struggle to score points against solid defenses. Royster will probably get going against this weak defense of Michigan.

The Nittany Lions have been pretty good on the defensive side of the football. They are giving up just 18.4 points per game, which is good for 23rd best in the country. The run defense has stumbled a bit the last few weeks. Jack Crawford is the best defensive lineman on the team, but he is dinged up and is questionable for this game. They’ll need Crawford and the whole defensive line healthy and ready against a great running team like Michigan.

The Pick:

I’m not generally a fan of counting on points from a team like Penn State, but I think they’ll be able to put up some against this porous defense of Michigan. The Wolverines offense will likely run all over a weakened defensive line for Penn State. I think the over is the best play in this matchup.

Michigan vs. Penn State Score Prediction: Michigan 31 Penn State 27
