Let the great quarterback debate begin.

Two of the PAC-10’s marquee quarterbacks will square off this Saturday as No. 13 Stanford Cardinal’s Andrew Luck duels with the Huskies’ Heisman hopeful Jake Locker.

But the meeting’s outcome could be tarnished as Locker is dealing with sore ribs and a bruised thigh, but he said Monday that there is no doubt he will start Saturday’s game against Stanford.

Meanwhile, Luck is on track to surpass the school record for TD passes in a single season of 27, shared by NFL great John Elway and Steve Stenstrom.

Luck has been phenomenal so far this season, and was named a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award on Monday after hitting 20-of-28 passing for 190 yards, three touchdowns and an interception Saturday as Stanford downed Washington State 38-28 at home. He leads the Pac-10 in total offense and ranks second in both touchdown passes (19) and passing efficiency.

Like Luck, Locker is a dual threat quarterback rushing for 276 yards through the Huskies’ first six games, but has come up short of preseason expectations, enduring a season dotted with injuries. Despite those setbacks, Locker has 14 touchdown passes to four interceptions, and 1,614 yards.

Those injuries played a huge role in Lockers’ poor performance at Arizona State on Oct. 9 and then again during Saturday’s 44-14 loss at No. 15 Arizona, as the senior played through the pain from an injury sustained in the Huskies win over then-No. 24 Oregon State in Week 6.

Locker was sacked a season-high four times, while being held to a season-low -24 rushing yards on six carries.

It’s no wonder Locker remains banged up, with an O-line that is offering him up an average of nearly twice per game.

The Cardinal defense will no doubt prey upon Locker, as they try to rattle the senior play caller as they reestablish themselves after a near giveaway in a 38-28 win over Washington State in their last outing, giving up 21 points in the final quarter of play.

Luck completed 20 of 28 passes for 198 yards and three TDs, as Stanford finished with 439 yards of total offense — its worst total in the last three games.

Junior receiver Chris Owusu, who is out with an undisclosed injury and whose return remains uncertain, ran back the opening kickoff 91 yards for a score in last season’s 34-14 home victory over then-No. 24 Washington. It was the Cardinal’s third win in the last four games against the Huskies.

This will be definitely a battle of quarterback, but with Locker’s injuries, I am just not sure he will be able to outduel Luck in this one.
