Tigers at Cornhuskers Preview

In a HUGE Big 12 match up this Saturday that has major BCS implications the 14th ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers (6-1) host the 6th ranked Missouri Tigers (7-0). College football lines have Nebraska as 7-point favorites in this game with a total of 55.

The Tigers knocked off #1 Oklahoma last week and even though they beat Nebraska in 2008 in their last visit to Lincoln Mizzou has lost 15 straight road games against ranked teams.

Mizzou is in 1st place in the Big 12 North and Nebraska is in 2nd place. The winner will be in the driver’s seat to play in the conference championship game. While both teams play some tough games to finish out their season neither team faces one that is currently ranked in the top 25 in the nation.

The Huskers are at home in Lincoln this Saturday and there is no place like home right? Well, maybe not for Nebraska, as while they have won 7 straight Big 12 games on the road they have lost 3 of their last 5 conference games at home including their last one against Texas where their offense went dormant and they failed to score a TD on offense.

This game is one between contrasting teams, as Nebraska ranks 5th in the nation in rushing yards per game and Missouri ranks 16th in passing yards per game. In looking at the defenses that will match up against the strengths of the other team the Huskers have the edge since their pass defense ranks 3rd in the nation and Missouri’s rushing defense ranks 23rd. However, Nebraska beat Oklahoma State last week, but gave up 283 passing yards.

Both of the QB’s in this game in Mizzou’s Blaine Gabbert and Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez were recently named as semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien Award, which is given to the nation’s top QB. The key in this game is which defense can stop the opposing QB from dominating on offense.

This season Missouri is 5-2 ATS and Nebraska is 3-3-1 ATS. In looking at some head to head betting trends the Huskers may be the smart bet, as the home team has covered the spread in 6 of the last 8 meetings between the 2 teams and the favorite has covered the spread 4 straight times.

In their last games Missouri beat Oklahoma 36-27 and Nebraska beat Oklahoma State 51-41.

Mizzou’s D has one goal in this game and that is to stop QB Taylor Martinez, who leads the Huskers not only in the air, but in rushing yards as well. The duel-threat QB had a big game last week passing for 323 yards with 5 TD and rushing for 112 yards. RB Roy Helu Jr., who has 500 yards rushing this season, but only 85 in his last 2 games, joins him in the backfield. The Tigers have up 402 yards to Oklahoma last week, but held the Sooners to 99 rushing yards and they also forced 3 turnovers.

Last week Martinez faced an Oklahoma State passing defense that ranks 115th in the nation and even though Mizzou is not much better ranking 76th the Tigers will likely be more successful if they can force the Huskers’ QB to beat them with his arm.

Tigers’ QB Blaine Gabbert threw for 308 yards with 1 TD in the win over Oklahoma and he has a solid WR corps. One key in that game was that he did not have to do it all since Missouri rushed for 178 yards. They may have to run the ball in this game to win and they will be facing a Nebraska rushing defense that ranks 79th in the nation and gave up 212 yards on the ground last week.

Turnovers are key in this game as is the rushing attack, as the more each team can run the more they can keep the opposing offense on the sidelines.

The Huskers have only played one bad game this season and that was the loss to Texas a couple weeks back. I think Mizzou proved last week they are for real and will come out and play well and while they may not win, but I think they will, it will be a close game and the Tigers will cover the 7-point spread.

Betting Trends

Missouri is 4-0 ATS against teams with a winning record and has an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 games as an underdog.
Nebraska is e 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite of 3.5-10, 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games against teams that have a winning record, and has an Over record of 5-2 in their last 7 games.

Pick: Missouri +7
