Buffaloes at Sooners Preview

Last week for the 3rd straight week a top-ranked team lost, as Oklahoma (6-1) lost to Missouri and this Saturday the 9th ranked Sooners host Colorado (3-4), who has yet to win a Big 12 game in their last season in the conference. College football lines have Oklahoma as big 23.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 54.5.

Oklahoma may get a chance to get some revenge against Missouri, as if the Sooners win the rest of their games they will play in the Big 12 title game and will likely be facing Mizzou.

Colorado has lost 3 straight Big 12 games and the first one was a shutout loss, but the last 2 have been close. However, this game may not be that close, as they are without injured QB Tyler Hansen and leading tackler Jon Major.

The Buffalos have major issues on defense, as they rank 94th in pass defense and their rushing defense has allowed an average of 190 yards on the ground in their last 4 games. Their main goal will be to keep Landry Jones from having a huge game. Jones has passed for 637 yards and 6 TD in his last 2 games, but he cannot turn the ball over, as his 2 INT’s in the loss to Missouri last week were very costly.

Colorado is heading west to the Pac 10 next season, but getting a win in Norman this Saturday is not likely since in their last 2 games there they have been out-scored 51-14 and they have not beaten the Sooners there since 1998.

Heading into this Big 12 game Colorado is 3-3-1 ATS and Oklahoma is 3-4 ATS. The betting trends are all pointing to Oklahoma covering the spread in this game, as the home team is 8-0 ATS in the last 8 meetings between the 2 teams, the favorite is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings, and Colorado has not covered the spread once in their last 5 games at Oklahoma.

In their last games Oklahoma lost to Missouri 36-27 and Colorado lost to Texas Tech 27-24.

Landry Jones and the Oklahoma 12th passing offense is a major worry for the Buffalos and they have to have solid coverage on WR Ryan Broyles, who has over 100 receiving yards in every game but one this season and is the 4th leading WR in receiving yards per game.

The Buffalos’ pass rush can help the secondary by getting to Jones, but that is not likely, as Colorado only has 13 sacks this season and Oklahoma has only allowed 11 sacks.

The pass offense is not the only worry, as the Sooners can run the ball as well. RB DeMarco Murray had his season low with 49 rushing yards last week, but he caught 8 passes out of the backfield for 48 yards and a TD. Also, in the 2 games before the loss to Missouri he had rushed for 227 yards. Colorado has really struggled to defend the run in the last couple of games and if that continues they have no chance to win.

Cody Hawkins will get the start under center for Colorado and in the Texas Tech loss he played decent going 22/43 for 274 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT. However, he will be pressured all game long and the Buffalos’ offensive line has given up 18 sacks this season.

The Buffalos’ rushing offense ranks 81st in the nation led by Rodney Stewart, who only had 34 yards averaging a paltry 1.7 yards per carry in the loss last week.

Oklahoma is at home and they are simply much better than Colorado on both sides of the ball. Landry Jones and DeMarco Murray will each have big games and the OU defense will keep the Buffalos in check. Oklahoma will win this game and cover the 23.5-point spread keeping Colorado winless in Big 12 play.

Betting Trends

Colorado is 8-17 ATS in their last 25 road games, 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog, and has an Under record of 5-2 in their last 7 road games.
Oklahoma is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss, 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite of 10.5 points or more, and has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games against teams with a losing record.

Pick: Oklahoma -23.5
