No. 19 Stanford earned a top 25 spot by winning its season opener 52-17 over Sacramento State and the jumped six spots after an impressive 35-0 win over UCLA at the Rose Bowl, while improving its record to 2-0.

The team will now return home to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons seeking its first 3-0 start since 2001.The Deacons and Cardinal met for the first-ever time last season with Wake Forest walking away with a 24-17 victory in at Winston-Salem.

The Deacons has been equally impressive opening their 2010 campaign with a dominating 53-13 victory over Presbyterian and then edged out Duke in a 54-48 offensive shootout in their ACC opener a week later.

Wake Forest have racked up at least 500 yards of offense in each of its first two games for the first time in school history, but will likely be without their starting QB Ted Stachitas, who left the game against Duke with a bruised left hand in the opening quarter of play.

Freshman QB Tanner Price came off the bench replacing the dual-threat sophomore throwing for 190 yards and three TDs, with one INT while rushing for 56 yards and another score in the win.

Price, who will most likely get the nod from Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe, will grab his first collegiate start under center in Saturday’s match up. He will be tasked with trying to dissect a tough Stanford defense that is currently ranked seventh nationally in total defense, allowing an average of just 200 yards in its first two games, including neutralizing the Bruins’ Kevin Prince who was pulled late in the third quarter after going 11 for 21 for 81 yards and two interceptions.

Pac-10 defensive player of the week, safety Michael Thomas led the way returning a UCLA fumble 21 yards for a touchdown as the Cardinal forced four turnovers in a dominating road victory.

On the contrary, the Deacons defense is a tad suspect showing some inconsistency in their first two tests, forcing four turnovers against the Blue Devils, but also surrendering three touchdown plays of at least 50 yards.

They won’t get away with those types of miscues against Stanford, who have rolled up 891 yards thus far.

The sound play from quarterback Andrew Luck has contributed 467 of those yards, along with six touchdowns and not a single interception this year.

Luck will hope his good fortune continues against the Deacons, who in his last meeting at Wake Forest, was 23 of 34 for 276 yards, two touchdowns and just one interception.

He will get some help from a solid rushing attack that despite the loss of in RB Jeremy Stewart who sat out with an ankle injury versus UCLA, has averaged 212 yards per game.

Wake Forest has won two of its last four road games against ranked opponents, beating Georgia Tech in 2006 and Florida State in 2008. This will be the program’s first game in California.

Stanford and Wake Forest each opened their respective conference schedule with a win, but the Cardinal was considerably more impressive, especially defensively. If Stanford can run the ball well enough to keep the Deacons’ offense off the field, the defense will do its job when called upon.
