San Jose State
This San Jose State Spartans football team is just not good at all. What’s the worst news for them? After a season opener at Alabama, they must go take on a stacked Wisconsin team at Camp Randall Stadium.
Mike Macintyre doesn’t have much to work with on either side of the football right now, but the single biggest strength for this team should be the running back position. Lamon Muldrow and Brandon Rutley are both very capable running backs that should get decent yardage this season. Jordan La Secla is the starter at quarterback, but he has had terrible problems with inconsistency in the past. His decision making must improve or this team won’t win many games at all this year.
The Spartans defense is just as bad as the offense, if not a little bit worse. The Spartans were second to last in all of college football in stopping the run last year. The front seven of this defense get manhandled on a constant basis, which makes the secondary help out in the running game. As you all know, when the secondary is too concerned about the run it opens up the passing game for the opponent as well. Duke Ihenacho is a great safety for this team, but he definitely can’t do it all by himself.
Wisconsin
The Badgers of Wisconsin aren’t being talked about a lot so far this year, but I think that could change as the season progresses. This is a team that is stacked offensively, and they could certainly surprise some people this year.
The Wisconsin offense is tremendous all the way across the board. You could make a solid case that the Badgers have the Big Ten’s best offense because of their amazing balance and the terrific offensive line. The veteran offensive line is one of the best in the nation and they should open up tons of holes for John Clay and Montee Ball to run through all year long. Clay is a dark horse in the Heisman race, and I fully expect big numbers from him this year. Scott Tolzien is an efficient quarterback who should continue to manage the offense beautifully in 2010. Nick Toon and David Gilreath are both great play makers on the outside. The Badgers will have an extremely impressive offense capable of wearing out many defenses this year.
The Wisconsin defense is definitely not as strong as their offense. The defensive line is a little weak compared to the other top teams in the Big Ten and the nation as a whole. They’ll need to shore up the run defense if they are going to be a top ten team this year. The Badgers secondary is solid and should do well shutting down most pass offenses they face. It will be up to the defense to rise to the occasion in the Badgers big games this year.
The Pick:
The Spartans are an awful team, but 38 points is just too much for me to take the Badgers. This one should be over early on and I’ll guess that Bielema takes the foot off the gas and the Badgers shut down this terrible Spartans offense. I’ll take the under here.
