Penn State

In Joe Paterno’s amazing coaching career he has never started a freshman quarterback, that is until this year. Robert Bolden is the freshman starter for the Nittany Lions in 2010. Bolden looked solid last week, but the competition was weak. It will be a whole new story this week, as Penn State goes to Alabama to battle the Crimson Tide.

While Bolden is the signal caller for this offense, Paterno knows he needs Evan Royster to be the leader. Royster gained just 40 yards on 11 carries last week, and the running game stalled out against Youngstown State. Alabama’s rushing defense is tremendous, but in order to win this game Penn State must establish the running game. The wide receivers are decent, but there aren’t any terribly explosive receivers. The offensive line will be the key to this unit in most of their games.

The Penn State defense should be the strength of this team, although the linebacker position is a bit of question mark. Penn State lost both Lee and Bowman, and they were two of the best in the league at that position. The defensive line is extremely talented, with Jack Crawford leading the way from his defensive end position. The secondary is also filled with talented veterans.

The defense should be solid in 2010. College Football

Alabama

The Alabama Crimson Tide are coming off a National Championship last year, and they are currently ranked #1 in the nation. Marcell Dareus and Mark Ingram are both expected to miss this game, but the amazing depth of the Crimson Tide should make up for their losses quite well.

The offense is led by senior Greg McElroy, who efficiently guided the team to a title a year ago. The clear strength of the offense is in their running game with Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy. Richardson will start in this one for the injured Ingram, and I fully expect him to make some major noise. Julio Jones is healthy and ready to go on the outside, which gives the Crimson Tide a go to receiver. The offensive line should be dominating this year and the offense as a whole should be even better than it was in 2009.

The defense returns has only two starters back from a year ago, so you might think they would struggle quite a bit in 2010. I don’t expect that to be the case at all for Alabama. Nick Saban is as good of a recruiter as there is in college football and this defense is loaded with talent that is ready to step in and do their job. The loss of Cody, Arenas, McClain, and many other key contributors will definitely hurt this defense, but I think many people are overstating how big the drop off in production will be. The secondary is a little weak, but I think Penn State will have trouble exploiting that weakness.

The Pick:

The Nittany Lions are in for tough one as they travel to Alabama with a freshman quarterback and a questionable offensive front. I expect Alabama to make Bolden’s day a long one. The Crimson Tide should be able to run the football effectively and throw it some as well. Alabama should cover the spread in this one. I like Alabama -12 here.

Penn State vs. Alabama Score Prediction: Alabama 28 Penn State 10
