LSU

The Tigers started off the season with a 30-23 win over the short-handed North Carolina Tar Heels. LSU appeared to be in control of the game, but just about let their lead slip all the way away before holding on at the end. Les Miles group clearly has plenty of room for improvement as the season goes along.

Jordan Jefferson is the man under center for the LSU offense. He has yet to prove that he is a big time play maker, but he seems to be improving his decision making. Probably the biggest downfall of the Tigers in 2009 was their inability to get much production from the running game. They’ll need Steven Ridley and Russell Shephard to step up this year if they are going to make noise in the difficult SEC.

Patrick Peterson is a guy to watch in this game. Peterson is a terrific kickoff and punt returner, and Vanderbilt has struggled in their special teams coverage over the last couple of years.

The LSU defense is filled with talented athletes who have amazing speed. Patrick Peterson is a star at the cornerback position and he’ll be one of the nation’s best this season. The LSU defensive line is quite solid, and they’ll be counted on to pressure the quarterback early and often this year. This LSU defense isn’t filled with star power, but they should be a pretty good unit in 2010. College Football

Vanderbilt

The Commodores enter this season with tons of question marks and a coach who has only been on the job for a few weeks. Bobby Johnson resigned not long before the season started and Robbie Caldwell was appointed coach of this team. They fought hard, but lost their season opener against Northwestern 23-21.

Larry Smith had what was probably his best game as quarterback of the Commodores last weekend against Northwestern. He threw for 240 yards and ran for another 48 yards. Vanderbilt is expected to have a tough time throwing the ball this year, and last year against LSU they had just 88 yards through the air. The Commodores will likely need to count on their ground game with Warren Norman and Zac Stacy to shoulder the load in this one. There are still tons of questions surrounding this Vanderbilt offense, and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see them struggle mightily this game.

The defense of Vanderbilt is actually pretty solid. Chris Marve is a tremendous linebacker and the entire unit of linebackers is one of the best in the SEC. Vanderbilt’s defense is the only reason they have even been in contention over the last year, because the offense has been horrible. The front four of the Commodores is alright when it comes to rushing the passer, but they don’t really have a run stuffer on the line anywhere. Overall, this is a decent defense that should hold their own this year.

The Pick:

The LSU Tigers haven’t lost to Vanderbilt since 1990, and I don’t expect that streak to stop this year. Les Miles team still has a lot of progress to make, but they are far more talented than Vanderbilt. The Commodores offense will likely struggle and I think LSU will get their running game going in this one. I like LSU -9.5 in this one.

LSU vs. Vanderbilt Score Prediction: LSU 27 Vanderbilt 10
