Most experts and fans did not expect Minnesota to be playing a meaningful game in the last week of the season, but here we are.

Minnesota

Only the extremely optimistic Minnesota fans were expecting them to be playing for a shot at the Big 10 championship game in the last week of the season. With the Gophers not having won a game in Madison since 1994, it will not be an easy task getting a win on the road.

After the comeback win against Nebraska last week the Gophers’ confidence will be sky high.

Last week Minnesota found themselves down 14 at half and 10 half-way through the third quarter, but that wasn’t a problem. They ended up winning 28-24 with a fourth quarter comeback led by a solid rushing attack. Running the ball for the Gophers was quarterback Mitch Leidner and running back David Cobb combining for almost 200 yards and two touchdowns.

Minnesota has had an impressive year with most of their success coming from the ground game. Their only losses were to TCU, Illinois and Ohio State. Quarterback Mitch Leidner is responsible for 17 touchdowns this year, seven coming on the ground.

They do not have the strongest passing attack and will try to keep the clock moving on the ground. The defense has played pretty well this year as well, only allowing an average of 22.5 points per game which is good for 30th in the nation.

Wisconsin

Led by Heisman trophy candidate Melvin Gordon, the Badgers look to find themselves playing for a Big 10 championship next week. Gordon is coming off another huge game last week where he ran for 200 yards which included an 88 yard touchdown run.

[dfads params=’groups=66501&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

This was the longest run of his career. He has gained at least 120 yards in nine straight games.

He has been the source of all offense generated for the Badgers this year. Gordon only needs one more yard to break the Big 10 single-season rushing record.

However, the defense for the Badgers has been stout too. They only allow 16.1 points per game which is good for 3rd in the country.

The Badgers want to forget about last years’ final game. They were 25 point favorites, but ended up losing the game 31-24.

Turnovers have played a big role in the Badgers’ losses this season. LSU and Northwestern both beat the Badgers’ by forcing turnovers and containing the run.

Wisconsin will look to get the run game going early and use it to set the tone for the rest of the game.

NCAA Football Handicapping Trends:

  • Badgers are 10-4 ATS in their 14 home games.
  • Over has gone over in last 12 of 14 head to head match-ups.
  • Badgers are 4-1 ATS in last five games.
  • Minnesota is 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games.

The Badgers’ will get things going quickly with Melvin Gordon on the ground. I expect him to have a game to further his push to win the Heisman. Minnesota has had a great year, but it will come to an end here. The rushing attack will be too much for their defense to handle.

The battle for the axe and championship will be a great game to watch and will go down as one of the best games of the year.

The match-up of Minnesota’s run defense and Gordon’s running ability will determine the outcome in this one.

Final Score– Wisconsin 31, Minnesota 27

Gordon’s rushing attack will be too much to handle, but at the end of the game I expect this one to be within two scores.
