With the Huskies becoming bowl eligible after their win against Oregon State last week, the team can tack on another win to an already semi-impressive first season in the Chris Peterson era.

The Cougars however, would like to stop them in their tracks.

Despite Washington’s winning record and bowl eligibility, the Cougars are only one game back in the conference standings. A win here could satisfy Washington State’s need to embarrass the Huskies in the annual Apple Cup meeting.

This year’s grudge match features a lot of new faces which will make this particular game a little extra fun than normal. The Huskies knocked off the Cougars last year 27-17 in Seattle.

Washington

It’s been an interesting first year for Chris Peterson as the head coach of the Huskies. Despite the ups and downs and learning curves, the team has finally come together in time to secure bowl eligibility. It also give Peterson 13 more practices to coach this young and talented squad.

Cyler Miles has shown steady progress this season. He’s completed 169 of 252 passes for 1,880 yards, 14 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. His go to receiver has been Jaydon Mickens, who has 48 receptions for 484 yards and 3 touchdowns on the year.

The running game has been a 3 headed attack for the Huskies this season. Lavon Coleman is leading with 129 carries for 538 yards and 1 touchdown. Dwayne Washington has 103 carries for 520 yards and 7 touchdowns. And Miles, who could be considered a 4th head to the run game, has 105 carries for 266 yards and 4 scores on the ground.

The Husky defense has been popular this season for many reasons. The biggest reason is the defensive line which stars the nation’s sack leader (with 17.5) in Hau’oli Kikaha, Andrew Hudson, and Danny Shelton. Hudson has 66 tackles, 13 for loss, 10 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. Shelton has 84 tackles, 16 for loss, 8.5 sacks and 4 fumble recoveries.

Washington State

A lot of people were worried about the Cougar offense when Connor Halliday went down for the year, ending his career at Washington State. Freshman Luke Falk stepped right in and didn’t skip a beat in replacing Halliday. While last week’s 4 turnover game was disastrous for Falk, his numbers are impressive: 129 of 194, 1,504 yards, 11 touchdowns, 5 interceptions.

The leading receiver for the Cougars, Vince Mayle, is also the nation’s second leading receiver. On the season, he has 101 receptions for 1,404 yards and 9 touchdowns. Next in receiving is Isiah Myers with 75 receptions for 906 yards and 12 touchdowns.

As a unit, the Cougar receiving corps features FOUR receivers with over 600 yards receiving and one just under 500 yards on the season.

The Cougar defense has struggled mightily, managing only 2 interceptions on the season. As a unit, they have totaled 28 sacks, 9 forced fumbles, 5 fumble recoveries and a blocked kick.

  •  Cougars are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 conference games

  •  Cougars are 0-5 ATS vs. a team with a winning record

Week 14 NCAA Football Prediction

On paper, this game should be a blowout in favor of the Huskies. Anybody who is a fan of either team will tell you that this is more often than not one of the hardest games of the season for each team. In a wild Pac-12 conference, anything goes in rivalry games.

Free NCAA Betting Pick: Washington -3

That being said, I still don’t think there’s a way the Cougars can avoid the pass rush of Washington…especially with almost no run game to speak of.

Final Week 14 Score: Washington 41 – Washington State 27

Cyler Miles and Chris Peterson will celebrate their first Apple Cup win of many in the frigid 20-30 degree temperatures of Pullman.
