South Carolina’s most recent win came over another Carolina team, as they beat up Coastal Carolina 70-10.

Five Gamecocks threw passes on the day. Quarterback Dylan Thompson completed eight of 11 passes for 140 yards and a pair of scores, adding an additional score on the ground, while fellow quarterback Connor Shaw also completed eight of 11 passes for 115 yards and a score, gaining another 39 yards and a third score on the ground.

Running back Jamari Smith paced the team on the ground, turning 10 carries into 103 yards and a score. 10 Gamecock receivers caught passes in the game, combining for 20 catches, 287 yards, and three receiving touchdowns. In total, the team racked up 639 yards of offense, 352 of which came on the ground.

The team’s defense surrendered 294 yards of offense, most of that through the air, and most with the game already in hand. The unit did however force three turnovers, the only three turnovers of the game.

Clemson breezed by The Citadel in their tune-up game, winning 52-6. Quarterback Tajh Boyd did pretty well whatever he wanted in the contest, completing 21 of 28 passes for 288 yards and five touchdowns, and adding 20 yards on the ground. His five touchdown passes went to five different receivers. Running back Roderick McDowell did most of the heavy lifting for the team on the ground, rushing 21 times for 108 yards.

The Clemson defense held Citadel to just 172 yards of offense. The Citadel attempted five passes in the game, completing only one, and that play went for a loss of four yards, telling you all you need to know about the kind of day the Citadel offense had. The team ran the ball 57 times but gained just 3.1 yards per carry. As of the break, Clemson had held The Citadel off the board, and then surrendered just a pair of meaningless field goals in the second half. One area of concern for the unit is that they allowed The Citadel to convert all three of their fourth down attempts.

The Gamecocks have won four in a row in this series and get this game at home. While they may have been forgotten in the grand scheme of things because of some early season losses, South Carolina is playing solid football at the moment.

The Gamecocks have won the last four meetings between these teams by a combined score of 124-54.

The play: South Carolina -5.5
