This could be one of the most important matchup between these teams ever, as the winner will represent the SEC West in the conference’s title game and will have a solid shot at making the national title game, while the loser’s national title hopes will be gashed.

These teams have combined to win the last four national titles. This year’s meeting will be just the second time that the teams have met with both sides ranked in the top five of the AP Poll, the last time coming in 1971.The Iron Bowl means a whole lot to both sides, but it almost lost some of its importance a week ago when the Tigers needed a late prayer to be answered to sneak by Georgia, 43-38.

Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall completed 15 of 26 passes for 229 yards and that crucial touchdown against Georgia.

The team’s offense had mostly been keyed by their rushing attack throughout the day, with Marshall rushing for 89 yards and a pair of scores, while running back Tre Mason ran the ball 27 times for 115 yards and a touchdown.

The Auburn defense didn’t have an especially impressive day, surrendering 38 points and 532 yards of offense. Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray was allowed to complete 33 of 49 passes for 415 yards and two scores, adding 37 yards and two additional scores on the ground, while Todd Gurley turned 15 carries into 79 yards and a score.

The unit did however force the game’s only turnover on an interception.

Alabama had no trouble of any kind last week as they throttled Chattanooga 49-0 in their tune-up game for this contest. AJ McCarron completed 13 of 16 passes for 171 yards and two scores in limited action.

Running back Kenyan Drake did a lot of the heavy lifting on the ground, carrying the ball 11 times for 77 yards and a score. Alabama had four rushing scores from four different players in the game.

The Tide defense shut out Chattanooga, limiting them to just 175 yards of offense, surrendering just 2.7 yards per rush, and just 82 yards through the air. The team also got a boost on special teams when Christion Jones returned a punt 75 yards to the house in the second quarter.

There was certainly a lookahead factor in play last weekend, but it still wasn’t pretty watching Auburn have as much trouble with Georgia as they did a week ago.

That doesn’t bode well for them against an Alabama team that won’t give up an inch on Saturday, although they will get the game at home, and in a rivalry game that means as much to the players as this one, it’s tough to imagine the Tide pulling away in this one.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban is 6-5 against the Tigers, but 0-5 all-time against Tiger teams that finish the year with nine or more wins.

The play: Auburn +11
