Ohio vs Tennessee – 3:35 P.M. Saturday, March 20th

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament 2nd Round
Ohio + 8 (-110)
Tennessee – 8 (-110)
Over/Under 138

The #14 seed Ohio Bobcats face the #6 seed Tennessee in the second round of the Midwest regional with tip-off slated for 3:35 Saturday, March 20th.

Ohio (22-14) made it into the field of 65 by virtue of their dramatic 81-75 overtime win over Akron in the Mid-American Conference Tournament finals after going just 7-9 in conference play in the regular season.

Junior G Armon Bassett, who was named the MAC Tournament MVP after scoring 116 points in the four games the Bobcats played, remained on fire by scoring a game high 32 points in their stunning 97-83 win over #3 seed Georgetown in the first round in a game they was never really close.

After trailing by 19, the Hoyas cut the lead to seven late in the second half but freshman G D.J. Copper buried a three and the rout was back on. Bassett is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.9 points per game and along with Copper, who is averaging 13.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game are Ohio’s two biggest offensive threats.

Tennessee’s (26-8) season has been filled with upset wins over both Kansas (76-68), handing the Jayhawks their first loss of the season and Kentucky (74-65), avenging an earlier 62-73 loss to the Wildcats as well as an ugly early season loss to USC (55-77),two losses to Vanderbilt in the regular season, and a lopsided 45-74 loss to Kentucky in the SEC Tournament finals.

You were not really sure what to expect from this team heading into this tournament.

After their first round 62-59 win over a very good San Diego State team, you get the feeling the Volunteers are setting themselves up for a deep run.

In the hard fought win, senior F-C Wayne Chism, the team’s leading scorer was held to 11 points and five rebounds but senior G J.P. Prince picked up the slack scoring 15 points and junior G Melvin Goins came off the bench to score a career high 15 points including four three pointers to lead the Volunteers over the Aztecs.

Ohio’s dominant win over Georgetown was impressive to say the least, but they will be hard pressed to duplicate this performance against a Tennessee team that suddenly seems ready to do some damage in the Midwest region.

The Volunteers make it to the Sweet 16, inching closer to a rematch with Kansas.

The Mid-West Bracket is wide open now that Kansas and Georgetown are knocked out. Many would think the Buckeyes can now coast through the Mid-West and onto the final four but they’ll have to get past Tennessee first, who has already beaten Kansas and Kentucky this year. Clearly Northern Iowa is not a team to take lightly even if they don’t move on, watch out. Any team can win on any given day.

Who do you got moving onto the Final Four from the Mid-west? I got Ohio State, and not because I am running with the favourite, but due to the fact that Evan Turner has three other players in Diebler, Buford and Lauderdale.
