Northern Iowa vs Kansas – 5:40 P.M. Saturday, March 20th

NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament 2nd Round
Northern Iowa + 11.5 (-110)
Kansas – 11.5 (-110)
Over/Under 128

The #9 seed Northern Iowa Panthers square off against the #1 seed Kansas Jayhawks in the second round of the Midwest regional with tip-off slated for 5:40 Saturday, March 20th.

Mountain Valley champion Northern Iowa (29-4) has been a very consistent team all season long.

They compiled a workman like 15-3 record in conference play with only one really bad loss on their resume; a 54-55 loss to Evansville and they cruised through the conference tournament, beating second seed Wichita State 67-52 in the finals. They started the season 16-1 and came into this tournament having won six out of their last seven so it was no surprise they earned the 9th seed in the Midwest region.

In their first round 69-66 victory over eight seed UNLV, it took a little more drama to pull out the win. With the game tied at 66 and only 4.9 seconds left, senior G Ali Farokhmanesh nailed a three pointer to give the Panthers the win.

He ended the night with 17 points and junior G Kwadzo Aheleqbe added 13. Senior F Adam Koch and senior C Jordan Eglseder round out a very solid starting five for this team.

There is little doubt that Kansas has been one of the best, if not the best team in the country. The Jayhawks have been ranked in the top three all season long and are currently a consensus #1. They are 33-2 overall, went 15-1 in conference play, and won the Big 12 Tournament in convincing fashion by beating #7 Kansas State for the third time this season by a score of 72-64.

They came into this tournament as the number one #1 seed and the odds-on-favorite at 2-1 to win it all: a rather impressive resume to say the least. In their first round 90-74 victory over 16 seed Lehigh they had to work a bit harder than expected.

Leading by only six at the half, they turned on the after burners midway through the second half to pull away for the win.

Sophomore F Marcus Morris led Kansas with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while senior G Sherron Collins added 18 of his own.

After somewhat of a close call it is highly doubtful that head coach Bill Self will allow his team to even think about looking past this game.

Much like Lehigh did, Northern Iowa should be able to keep this one close early but there is just too much talent on this Kansas team for the Panthers to hang in there down the stretch.

The Jayhawks pull away to win and cover the 11 ½.
