Cornell’s second-round showing is an unprecedented strong output from the Ivy League. The Big Red rolled along in conference play this season; they’ll shoot the lights out in any building.

Perhaps most impressive in 2009-10 was when Cornell gave Kansas a serious scare in Lawrence; the #1 Jayhawks edged Cornell by just five points.

Though the Big Red gets a balanced contribution up and down the roster, forward Ryan Wittman (17.6 PPG) and center Jeff Foote (12.4 points, 8.2 rebounds per game) stand out. As a team, Cornell has cracked the 75-point plateau in its past three games; when the basket starts looking wider for these shooters, the Big Red is a formidable foe.

The Badgers, on the other hand, feature a plodding game suitable for the physical Big Ten. Four out of Wisconsin’s starting five average double-digit PPG, though veteran guard Trevon Hughes and junior forward Jon Leuer are the squad’s steadiest performers.

The #19 Badgers narrowly escaped Wofford in their first-round tilt and certainly must not overlook Cornell’s offensive capabilities if they want to advance in the tournament.

Wisconsin met a team with similar strengths to Cornell within their conference this season in the Northwestern Wildcats – two teams that love to dial it up long range.

Hence, if the Badgers defend the perimeter efficiently all game, they have to like their chances moving forward.

Free Big Red vs. Badgers Free Tournament Pick: Wisconsin has the size, experience and team cohesion to string things together and handle Cornell in the second round. However, if the Big Red’s shooters get open – or even if they heat up like they’ve shown they can throughout the campaign – the Badgers just might find a thorn in the Ivy (League). Cornell looked good against Kansas in the regular season and better versus Temple in its opening-round game. Conventional wisdom says the Badgers will prevail, but conventional wisdom is often thrown to the wolves in the tourney.

Score Prediction: Cornell 74, Wisconsin 71
