This second-round match-up features a battle between two strong teams in two strong basketball states (Texas, Indiana). Unfortunately for the Boilermakers, their team is much stronger with injured star Robbie Hummel.

The junior forward – who had an outstanding freshman campaign a couple seasons ago – brought 15.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game to the table in this regular season. Without Hummel, Purdue is simply not as confident scoring the ball.

Purdue head coach Matt Painter and fans in West Lafayette have leaned on other players, such as guard E’Twaun Moore and – most notable lately – forward JaJuan Johnson, to pick up the slack. The Boilers finished a stubborn Siena team in the first round 72-64, but without the scoring prowess of Hummel, Purdue must ensure they play tight D and limit mistakes.

Texas A&M has been a strong team of late. This is the third straight season the Aggies have advanced to the second round of the tournament; they should be confident in their ability to press on versus Purdue. Five of A&M’s top players average at least nine points a game. The most dangerous offensive weapon is senior guard Donald Sloan, who dumps in a cool 18.0 PPG.

The Aggies had no problems with Utah State in their tournament opener; a stand-out performance from freshman Khris Middleton paced the way to a 16-point win.

Middleton has stepped up huge since veteran guard Derrick Roland broke his leg in December.

A one-two punch of Sloan and Middleton will be plenty for Purdue to handle defensively, and unless a player like JaJuan Johnson erupts for a career-best performance, the Boilermakers’ tournament push might be at the end of the line.

Free Boilermakers vs. Aggies Free Tournament Pick: Purdue is ‘deep-in-the-tournament’ strong when fully healthy, but have looked much shakier without one of its best players. The Boilers aren’t without strengths – they were co-Big Ten champs, for goodness sake! – but with the Aggies playing as strong as they currently are, expect Texas A&M to be moving on to the Sweet 16.

Score Prediction: Texas A&M 63, Purdue 56
