FSU Seminoles vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Preview
2nd seed Notre Dame had a pretty easy time in their second round win and Florida State, which pulled off an upset in the second round, comes into this game with confidence that they can pull off another upset. NCAAB lines have Notre Dame as 5-point favorites in this game with a total of 133.
In their opening NCAA Tourney games FSU beat Texas A&M 57-50 and Notre Dame beat Akron 69-56.
Notre Dame did not cover the spread against Akron and this season they were 16-12 ATS while FSU did cover against Texas A&M and this season was 15-10-2 ATS.
Notre Dame did not have the best offensive game in the win over Akron only shooting 44.7% from the field and Big East player of the year Ben Hansbrough was the high scorer, but he was only 4/11 from the floor. However, they won the battle of the boards, shot well from behind the 3-pt arc, and they played great D holding Akron to only 35.9% shooting. 
Florida State beat Texas A&M outscoring them by 10 points in the 2nd half and the main reason they won is that their defense holding the Aggies to only 31.4% shooting. FSU G Derwin Kitchen and F Bernard James combine to score 25 points, but overall the Seminoles struggled with their shot, especially from deep.
Purdue is a great 3-pt shooting team and one thing FSU has going for them is that all 3 of their starting guards are at least 6’4” and they will make it hard for the Fighting Irish to get open looks from deep. Also the Seminoles rank 13th in the nation in rebounds per game while Purdue ranks 76th and FSU has the nation’s 27th ranked defense. However, they are not a high scoring team and they have to hit the boards and play good D to win.
Hansbrough is obviously the main guy for the Irish, but they will also need the F duo of Carleton Scott (11.4 7.3 rpg) and Tim Abromaitis (15.3 ppg 6.1 rpg) have to not only score, but also hit the glass as well.
This game is not a bad match up for Florida State and I think their D will keep this game close, as they will cover the 5-point spread and they may even pull off an upset.
