Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Kansas Jayhawks Preview

Many thought that 9th seed Illinois was a legit Final 4 team before the season began and they can help prove those people right with a big upset over #1 seed Kansas. NCAAB lines have Kansas as 8.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 144.

In their second round games Kansas had no trouble beating Boston University 72-53 and Illinois looked impressive in beating UNLV 73-62.

Kansas did not cover the spread against Boston U while Illinois did against UNLV. This season both teams were mediocre bets with Kansas at 16-16-1 ATS and Illinois at 17-15-1.

Illinois shot lights out in their win over a UNLV team with a solid defense shooting 59.6% from the floor and burying 7/13 of their 3-pointers. F Mike Davis tied his season high with 22 points and star G Demetri McCamey scored 17 points. The Fighting Illini also played great on the defensive end of the court holding UNLV to only 38.9% shooting. They also had 9 more rebounds than UNLV.

Kansas will be a much tougher test for Illinois and in the Boston U game 4 Jayhawks’ players scored in double figures and the Morris twins of Markieff and Marcus combined to score 31 points and grab 17 boards. For Illinois to pull off the upset they will have to keep these guys from having big games. That responsibility will fall on Davis and 7’1” C Mike Tisdale, as they have to keep the Twins from dominating the paint. Still, the Fighting Illini only rank 183rd in the nation in rebounds per game while Kansas rank 19th.

Illinois does have an athletic team and their backcourt also has to keep the Kansas guard trio of Tyshawn Taylor, Brady Morningstar, and Tyrel Reed from getting open looks from deep. These 3 guys combined for 29 points and hit on 7/13 of their 3-pointers.

Illinois plays good defense and they like to force turnovers, but it is unlikely that they will force many from Kansas in this game.

Illinois will not win this game, but they have noting to lose and since they are an athletic team I think they will give Kansas a game and cover the 8.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

Illinois is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog of 7.0-12.5 points and Kansas is -5-1 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite and 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games against teams with a winning record.

Pick: Illinois +8.5
