Miami
The Heat are not very good this season. However, they oddly have a winning record on the road even though they have struggled overall. It was obviously expected that the Heat would struggle without the services of the best player on the planet but I don’t think Pat Riley and Co. figured it would be this bad, and things would be even worse if Hassan Whiteside hadn’t developed like he has – and who saw that coming. Miami is teetering on being irrelevant and that is a dangerous slope.
The emergence of Whiteside continues to be the best thing about this team. In their last game, a win over Boston, he led the team in scoring and he has 6 double-doubles in his last 10 starts. If other players on the team were taking advantage of opportunities the way that he has this team would be surging not struggling.

Detroit
What is happening in Detroit. After going on an impressive run after releasing Josh Smith they have been giving it all back lately – after winning 7 in a row they have gone just 6-7 to make you wonder if this team really has it in them to get into the playoff race. If they are going to make the playoffs at some point they are going to have to leapfrog the Heat so this game is important to them. They are only a few games out and need to get their mojo back. Tonight is a good place to start.
There will be a nice battle in the middle here with Hassas Whiteside taking on Andre Drummond. Both still have a long way to go before they become refined offensive players but I wouldn’t want to be a guard fighting for a rebound in this one. The loss for the season of Brandon Jennings hurts but D.J. Augustin is a viable backup who probably helps the offense more with his ability to make shots.
