2010 Major League Baseball NLCS- Game 4 Preview

Philadelphia Phillies vs San Francisco Giants
Wednesday, Oct. 20   7:30 P.M. (ET).
Philadelphia         +110
San Francisco      -115
Over/Under 8

The best-of-seven NLCS plays its second of three games at AT&T Park in San Francisco with the Giants holding a 2-1 series lead after a 3-0 win in yesterday’s Game 3. Game 4 is scheduled for tonight with the first pitch at 7:30 p.m. (ET) and will be broadcast live on FOX.

Philadelphia finds itself in some unchartered waters in the NLCS after getting shutout in postseason play for the first time since 1993. Cole Hamels gave up five hits and three earned runs in his six innings of work in yesterday’s loss, but the Phillies offense only managed three hits and could not capitalize on the few opportunities they had to put some runs on the board.

San Francisco’s offense is certainly not lighting things up either, but the Giants are making the most of whatever opportunities the Phillies pitchers have allowed and that is why they have a two to one game lead in this series.

Philadelphia will turn to right-hander Joe Blanton for tonight’s game. He did not get a chance to pitch in the NLDS so this will be his first start in this year’s postseason. Blanton went 9-6 in the regular season and had a 4.82 ERA in 28 starts. In his last start, he gave up three hits and no earned runs in seven innings of work. Lifetime against the Giants he is 2-3 with an ERA of 4.73.

San Francisco will go with left-hander Madison Bumgarner as its starter for this game. In his one start in the NLDS against Atlanta he got the win after giving up six hits and just two earned runs in six innings of work. He went 7-6 in the regular season and had an ERA of 3.00 in 18 starts. This will be his first career start against Philadelphia.

The Phillies come into this game as the underdog for the first time in the series. They went 26-17 as a dog in the regular season and were 74-85-3 against the ‘over/under’ line. San Francisco was 60-36 as the favorite and 75-82-5 against the ‘over/under’ line. Game 1 went ‘over’ the total, Game 2 was a ‘push’, and Game 3 stayed ‘under’.

Philadelphia suddenly finds itself in an almost must-win situation with the inevitable outcome of this series hinging on this game. Shutdown pitching will not be the case in this game so look for the Phillies’ bats to respond more so than the Giants and once again even the series with a win.
