Cleveland Indians (34-26 through June 8 )
Mitch Talbot (2-2, 4.18)

Uh-oh. It was only a matter of time, wasn’t it? The Cleveland Indians are starting to look like the sorry bunch we all thought they were entering the 2011 season. The first-place Tribe may not hold onto that spot in the American League Central for long, as they’ve lost six of their last seven games. They’ve been shut out twice and scored two runs or fewer five times over that span.

Asdrubal Cabrera continues to have a career year, sitting at .302 with 12 homers and 42 RBI through 60 games, but he needs some help. Shin-Soo Choo and Carlos Santana were supposed to be this team’s offensive leaders and neither guy has snapped out of his season-long funk, though Santana is still getting on base thanks to his absurd walk rate.

Mitch Talbot doesn’t pick his spots. Four of his five starts this season have been against Boston (twice), Toronto and Texas, and he’s survived save for one eight-run beating the second time he battled the Red Sox. Maybe he’s mentally ready for the Yankees? [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

New York Yankees (33-26)
Bartolo Colon (4-3, 3.39)

It should surprise no bettor that the Yankees lead the majors in runs scored and homers. Few if any teams can match their power. But it really surprises me to see that they have the ninth-best ERA in baseball. Pitching was supposed to be their Achilles heel this season, wasn’t it?

Enter Bartolo Colon. He continues to show off the effects of his bizarre, stem-cell shoulder surgery. Consistency hasn’t been his forte but his control has been excellent and he’s turned in many a quality start.

MLB Trends:

CLE are 1-8 in their last 9 games on grass.
Over is 10-2 in CLE last 12 Fri. games.
CLE are 9-4 in their last 13 Fri. games.
Over is 7-0-1 in NYY last 8 home games.
Under is 18-7-2 in NYY last 27 Fri. games.
NYY are 4-10 in their last 14 home games.
CLE are 9-25 in the last 34 meetings in New York.

The pick:

This is not the time for a struggling Indians team to visit the Bronx. They need Minnesota or Baltimore, a punching bag to boost their confidence. Instead, they’re playing the intimidating Yankees. Talbot has been good, especially on the road, but his sample size is so small that I’m not sold on him yet. I doubt Colon will be dominant but he’ll do enough, as he has many times this season.

Indians vs Yankees prediction: Yankees 6, Indians 4
