If the Mets want to reclaim the top spot in the NL East there is no better opportunity than right now.

New York

The Mets started the second half at St. Louis and it wasn’t pretty.

They lost the first two games but were able to salvage a win in the third…and now they are off to the nation’s capital to take on the Nats.

The Mets road woes are well documented but in their lone series at Washington they took two of three.

That was to start the season and they have only played one series since so they will be seeing a lot of each other over the next few months. This is an opportunity.

There has been a lot of talk about the starting pitching of the Mets lately and rightfully so.

Even though he might not have the best numbers this season it is hard to argue that the best pitcher is not Matt Harvey.

The Dark Knight has been solid all season long even if he is a little more beatable on the road. In two starts against the Nats this season he has not given up a run over 13 innings.

Washington

The Nationals are holding a very slim lead over the Mets right now. They lost two of three to the Dodgers over the weekend and surprise surprise got shutout by Zach Greinke yesterday.

Facing another dominating righty in Matt Harvey is not going to be much easier, especially with Ryan Zimmerman joining the long list of players on the DL.

Even with Bryce Harper healthy they only scored five runs in three games against L.A. That kind of production might be all they can expect until they get healthy.

Gio Gonzalez looks to be finally finding his form.

In his last three starts he has given up a total of two runs over 20 innings and the Nats really need him to be sharp to keep the Mets at bay.

All season long he has been a much better pitcher at home and they are going to need him to keep it up because the Nats haven’t been able to touch Harvey this season.

This is pretty good value if you want to take Washington.
